New Rathdown Junior School Principal
28th January 2019

Rathdown School is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Dermot Dix as the Principal of Rathdown Junior School.

Dermot brings a wealth of experience with him to Rathdown School. He is currently Headmaster of Headfort School, Kells, Co. Meath, a position he has held since 2003. Headfort is an independent, co-educational, non-denominational, day and boarding school for children aged between 3 and 13, the only one of its kind in Ireland. Headfort shares similarities with Rathdown Junior School, with a diverse community of Irish and international children, child-centred learning, small class sizes and extensive extra-curricular offerings. Headfort gained a lot of national and international attention following the Award Winning 2016 documentary on Headfort called “School Life”.

Dermot's school years were spent in independent education, first as a student of Headfort, and later in St. Columba’s College, Rathfarnham. He holds a Bachelor of History from Trinity College, Dublin and a Masters of History from Pembroke College, Cambridge. Dermot has published a number of academic contributions in the field of history, notably the history of the British Empire in America, India and Ireland. Prior to commencing his work at Headfort, Dermot spent 16 years in New York teaching History. This included several years at The Dalton School in Manhattan, which is routinely ranked among the top private high schools in the United States. Dermot has been dedicated to the field of education for over 30 years - 15 of which as Headmaster. Dermot is married to Chandana Mathur, who lectures in Anthropology at Maynooth University. The couple has one son, Conall, aged 19.

It is a source of great pride that as we embark on celebrating 100 years of education on our campus in 2019, we have the opportunity to work together, leading Rathdown School into our second century of service to the children of our community and the next chapter of the Rathdown School story. Dermot is looking forward to working with the whole school community - pupils, parents, past pupils, Junior School and Senior School colleagues and Board of Governors. This is an important and transformational moment in the history of Rathdown School and we are excited to have Dermot lead the Junior School effective 13th August. With the benefit of Dermot’s proven track record - working in prestigious, historic, day and boarding junior schools, with an innovative and progressive approach to all aspects of school life, from academic to extra-curricular and pastoral care - we look forward to his leadership of Rathdown Junior School and to continued success in the years ahead. We believe Dermot will continue to build on the excellence in education we expect of our school as well as the culture and community. The Board of Governors remain most grateful for the contributions made by Ms. Kiara Drake throughout her time as Principal of Rathdown Junior School. The process for the selection of our new Junior School Principal was very extensive. The Board was delighted with the level of interest shown in the position by a large number of highly qualified candidates. We are now thankful and excited to have found an exceptional leader in Dermot Dix to take Rathdown Junior School to the next level.

Finally, we would like to congratulate Dermot on his appointment and assure him of our support as he takes up the exciting challenge of providing a personalised, child-centred, vibrant, colourful and friendly education for the children of Rathdown Junior School.
