Congratulations go to Eastbourne College sixth former Sam Williams for being selected by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) UK Youth Squad – RS:X (Olympic Class Windsurfing).
His selection recognises his potential to progress within the British Sailing Team, with the aim of winning further selection and beyond to the Olympic Development programmes.
Sam has been selected on the basis of performance and commitment to a programme of training and competition over a period of several years. This is a fantastic achievement which establishes his status as a UK Squad sailor, and RYA Youth Racing Manager, Mark Nicholls, is hopeful that he will represent Great Britain at major international events in the coming years,
'As Sam progresses through the performance pathway, the expectations and necessary commitment required to achieve desired performance objectives increase significantly. Training weekends are generally intense and involve a range of activities, including time on the water, fitness training, class room based theory sessions and work with specialist support staff and coaches.’
Appropriately, one of Eastbourne College’s core values is ‘the pursuit of excellence’ and the school continues to collaborate with the RYA and the Williams family to demonstrate their support. Headmaster of the College, Tom Lawson, recognises Sam’s talent and the dedication required by all parties involved,
‘It is an outstanding and selfless act that the Williams family manage to navigate the obligations and the added expectations that elite international sport brings. In many respects, our [Eastbourne College, the RYA and the William’s family] collective end goals are one and the same, to instil a set of skills and values in Sam that weather the test of time. Communication, organisation, leadership and planning are all relevant features of sailing and complement the whole-of-learning approach we have here at the College. When Sam competes, we will be on the board with him.’
