Royal visit as Ridley reborn
2nd October 2013

The visit began with a reception in the Bridewell Room, where Her Royal Highness was introduced to the Head Boy and Head Girl as well as several pupils from the student council and long standing members of staff. In the Science School she met 3rd & 4th Form pupils who spoke to her about a number of experiments they were demonstrating in the laboratories. She then took in a GCSE class in the Food & Textiles Department where again she spent much time speaking to pupils and learning about their work.

Ridley House, which opened in September to meet increasing demand for boarding places at King Edward’s, has been beautifully refurbished and Her Royal Highness was shown around by Head of House Ascanio Piersanti and Tom Goddard, a 3rd Form pupil. She saw several of the newly refurbished common rooms, where she was entertained with games of pool and table tennis by the boys and saw for herself the new plush, comfortable surroundings of Ridley’s revitalised interior.

The tour concluded with the unveiling of a plaque by Her Royal Highness to commemorate the reopening of Ridley House. She congratulated the school on the wonderful job it has done with the refurbishment and wished the boys in the house every success.

As Her Royal Highness left the school, she was presented with a posy by Shannon White, a pupil from the 2nd Form (Year 8).

Notes to Editor:

King Edward’s School

King Edward’s School in Witley, Surrey, is an independent co-educational boarding and day school for boys and girls from ages 11 to 18. The School was founded in 1553 to provide housing and education for destitute children in London. To this day the School still provides bursary support and boarding accommodation for around a quarter of its students and high levels of pastoral care are at the heart of its ethos. However, the School has moved on to become one of the top independent schools in the country, with a reputation for excellence in many areas, including its International Baccalaureate 6th Form curriculum.
