A sports scholar at Rydal Penrhos turned in a record-breaking performance to claim a national athletics title.

Kieron McNamara, an Upper Sixth Form pupil at the school, recently competed at the Welsh Schools’ Athletics Championships after qualifying for the event in three categories following a standout performance in the regional heat.

The 18-year-old turned in a fabulous performance throughout the event, which saw him compete in the High Jump, Javelin and Shot Putt after securing a memorable gold medal treble from the Eryri Championships.

He manage to replicate his exceptional recent form on the national stage, securing the Shot Putt gold after a mammoth 12.87 metre throw, which also happened to be a new Rydal Penrhos record.

This success follows on from Kieron’s Javelin silver medal at last year’s competition and rounds off a hugely impressive stint as a member of Rydal Penrhos’ thriving Sports Scholarship programme.

The departing Sixth Former has represented Lancashire Rugby at U18 level and narrowly missed out on a place in the Independent School Lambs squad.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “Kieron is another real success story for our sports scholarship programme, which has once again recorded a wide range of regional and national achievement during another outstanding academic year.

“He has really flourished both as an athlete and as a person thanks to the opportunities and support offered to him at Rydal Penrhos, and hopefully this will stand him in good stead as he embarks on the next stage of his journey following a well-deserved summer break.”
