A plethora of track and field stars claimed a haul of medals from a regional competition recently.
Rydal Penrhos sent a large contingent to the Conwy Schools’ Athletics Championships at Parc Eirias, and the school turned in a superb effort to come away with four gold medals, eight silver and five bronze from the event.
Upper Sixth Form pupil Kieron McNamara produced a fantastic effort to strike double gold in the shot putt and high jump competitions, while Elinor Davies and Jacob Heaton-Rue secured first place from their respective 200-metre events.
Davies also achieved silver in the 100m category, with Mollie Smithfield (800m), Sam Randall (1,500m) and Emily Madden (200m) also secured second place on the podium.
Edward Patrick brought home two silver medals in the 400m and 1,500m events, and there were further seconds from Zach Speakman (high jump), Brona Richardson (shot putt) and Cameron Shaw (800m).
Rounding off the Rydal Penrhos success was Jamie Smith (1,500m), Nuria Sendros (shot putt), Smithfield (long jump), Baptiste Mazars (hurdles), Heaton-Rue (100m) and Anthony Bowe (high jump), who all secured bronze medals from their events.
The group worked alongside Rydal Penrhos’ dedicated strength and conditioning staff to hone their skills and technique in the lead-up to the competition, and they will be looking for further accolades at the Eryri Schools’ Championships on Friday, May 4.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This was a very encouraging start to a busy season for the group, and hopefully this will give them plenty of confidence heading into the coming weeks.”
