Support staff at New Hall School, a boarding and day school in Chelmsford, held their third annual Bake Off Competition over the half term break. The Competition, organised by school PA Taryn Dodd, aptly fell just days after Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off Final. The staff, most of whom continue working over the holidays, were thrilled to spend their lunchtime at the tasting and judging of the homemade treats.
Mrs Dodd chose fruits scones for the challenge, because of their relative simplicity, making the competition inclusive of all baking abilities. For more adventurous bakers, there was the chance to spice up the competition, by using their creative flair to give their bakes an original ‘twist,’ in true bake-off style!
The contestants, who hailed from the Marketing, Administrative and Boarding departments, were briefed to produce 8 fruit scones, with judging based on taste and preparation. The fortunate judges were very meticulous in their judging, as it was clear that much effort had been put into the bakes. Most contestants had put their own stamp on their scones, ranging from raspberry and coconut to autumnal flavours. Finally, a winner and two runners up were crowned. Congratulations to the Bake Off Champion Natasha Lee, Marketing Assistant, who was awarded a trophy for her efforts in preparing delicious cranberry and white chocolate scones, served with homemade jam. In second place was Kieran Hatten, Communications Manager, for his three ingredient ice cream scones with raisins, and in third, Katharine East, Marketing Assistant, with her raspberry and coconut heart-shaped scones with white chocolate clotted cream.
The end to the judging was welcomed by the gathered audience, as this signalled their opportunity to sample the bakes for themselves. The Bake Off made for a wonderful afternoon break for the staff at New Hall, and we wait with eager anticipation for the date and challenge of the next event to be announced. Maybe you will see some New Hall staff appearing in next year’s Great British Bake Off series!
