A special guest at Founders' Day
25th September 2017

A respected astrophysicist contributed significantly to the success of the annual Founders’ Day at Rydal Penrhos.

The Rev'd Professor David Wilkinson, Principal of St John's College and lecturer at the University of Durham, is an author, speaker, astrophysicist and Methodist minister who participated in a host of activities at the school on Friday, September 22 as part of the event.

In the early afternoon he gave the Scientific Society lecture to a crowded Carnegie Room about the possibility of there being other intelligent life in the Universe and what questions that might raise for philosophers and theologians.

At the annual Founders' Day Service he preached on the significance of the person of Jesus using St Paul's letter to the Colossians chapter one as his text.

This was followed by a talk to dozens of people from local churches about whether science can help us in our search for God.

Reverend Nick Sissons, Chaplain at Rydal Penrhos, said: “This event was held in Prince's Drive Baptist church, which came out of our friendship with the minister Rob Beamish, who comes to speak at chapel regularly and is much respected by the staff and pupils alike for the way in which he can engage his listeners, usually with tales from the cinema.

“David Wilkinson also showed himself to be a thoughtful and gifted communicator and we were very privileged to have him share time with us in these three very different contexts.”
