Brentwood School karting star Matt Luff was named Havering Junior Sports Competitor of the Year by the Havering Sports Council at their Awards Evening at Upminster Golf Club.
The award followed an outstanding year of racing for the 15-year-old which saw him achieve his second world championship and a plethora of titles including the British Schools’ title, Man of Steel award, Endurance Champion, Junior TKM success, an All Star Cup win and runner-up in the Ginetta Junior Scholarship.
Back in July, Matt led his three-driver Brentwood School karting team to victory in the British Schools' Karting Championship (BSKC) final at Whilton Mill in Northampton.
The team had already won the semi-final heats at Brentwood Raceway and the Regional Final at Buckmore Park to earn their place in the final. Matt also scooped accolades for the Fastest Lap Award and Best Performing Driver which secured him with a place in the Ginetta Junior 2017 Scholarship competition.
Fresh from his success in the BSKC, Matt travelled to Paris the following weekend to represent the UK and defend his SODI SWS Junior World Karting title which he had easily won in 2015.
Competing with a massive height and weight disadvantage, he defied the odds to successfully defend his title to be crowned the SODI SWS Junior World Karting Champion 2016, the only driver ever to have won the title twice.
Between March and October, Matt competed in the Buckmore Park Man of Steel, eight round, one hour, solo endurance championship. Winning virtually every round and leading the points table throughout, he won the title of Man of Steel 2016 in October.
Matt is one third of the Brentwood Banta endurance team which competed throughout 2016 to win the Buckmore Park Endurance Championship. Ranked 1st in the UK and 7th in the World, the team has qualified to compete in the World Series in Paris this year.
Racing throughout 2016 in his own Junior TKM kart, Matt came 2nd in the Kimbolton Junior TKM Championship and 3rd in the prestigious East Anglian Cup. He was also crowned the Brentwood Raceway All Star Cup winner, Summer 2016.
And, if that wasn’t enough, he also broke a number of lap records at Ellough Park, in Suffolk, Buckmore Park, in Kent, and Red Lodge, in Suffolk.
In October’s Ginetta Junior 2017 Scholarship competition at Blyton Park, in Lincolnshire, Matt excelled in all three test categories - driving, media and fitness.
He now has his sights set on Brands Hatch success when he makes his debut on the famous circuit on April 1st in the Ginetta Junior Championship supporting the British Touring Cars. We wish him continued success!
