Founding Headmaster to set up First British Prep School in Hong Kong
25th October 2016

We are pleased to announce that we have appointed Gary Wright as our Founding Headmaster for Mount Kelly International School in Hong Kong. Gary has now taken up his role in Hong Kong and is preparing for the school opening in September 2017.

Mount Kelly International School will be Hong Kong’s first British Preparatory School in Hong Kong and only the second British School to be established in the former British colony after Harrow School. The design and build of the new £120 million school is being delivered by civil engineering consultants Atkins Consulting. Mount Kelly is a well-known and respected HMC boarding and Day School in Tavistock, Devon.

Mr. Gary Wright will join us with a wealth of experience in the independent sector, including being Head of two independent schools. He has held a number of roles in his career, including at Adcote School, Abbey College, Birmingham, St. Piran’s Preparatory School, St. Nicholas Preparatory School, and at Eaton Square School as well as having teaching experience in his earlier career in international schools in Russia, Kuwait and Japan.

Gary was the Headmaster of Adcote School, a day and boarding school in Shropshire for 7 years. We are delighted that an educationalist and leader of his stature is joining us.  He is exceptionally well-qualified for the position, having successfully led and managed the academic environment, growth and progression of independent schools in the UK.

Gary has tremendous experience in pupil and student recruitment both domestically and internationally, and at Adcote he oversaw, in conjunction with a partner company, the development of an international marketing office for the school located in Birmingham, as well as the establishment of offices in China and Nigeria. He also attracted a multi-million pound investment to the school from overseas.

As a result of these and other initiatives, Gary considerably increased domestic and international recruitment at the school, with an over threefold increase in the pupil roll achieved during his tenure at Adcote.

In 2011, 2014, and 2015 Adcote was shortlisted in the TES Independent School of the Year awards. In 2012, Adcote won the Independent Schools Association ‘Award for Excellence’ for growth in pupil numbers and reflecting whole school achievement in independent education.

Gary is a graduate of Warwick and of Oxford Brookes University, as well as King’s College London, from where he holds an MA in Education Management. He holds a National Professional Qualification for Headship and he is an experienced serving Inspector with the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

As part of the preparations for opening the school, it is with great pleasure that we are announcing our ground breaking ceremony on Saturday 5th November at the school site in in Hong Kong. We look forward to welcoming many distinguished guests, including the Headmaster of Mount Kelly UK, Mr Mark Semmence, as well as many Old Kelleians (Mount Kelly alumni) who live in Hong Kong.

The new school is set to open in September 2017 with 420 pupils, rising to 800 day and boarding pupils by 2019.
