At just 16 years old, young Oswestry School pupil, Fiona Newman, has been selected to become one of just 3 Lord Lieutenant Cadets for Shropshire.
Lord Lieutenants Cadets are drawn each year from the armed services (Army, Air Force and Navy Cadets). The Cadets support the Lord Lieutenant in his duties as the Queen’s representative within the various counties across the country. The present Lord Lieutenant is Algernon Heber-Percy Esq whose family have lived in Shropshire at Hodnet Hall for 9 centuries.
Fiona was nominated for the post by Oswestry School’s CCF Contingent Commander, Alistair Othen. Her application, along with many others, was vetted and considered by the Shropshire lieutenancy committee who then selected Fiona as a suitable candidate.
Fiona was presented with a certificate and badge which she will wear during her tenure. Former Oswestry School pupil, Victoria Whittingham (2003-2012), had previously been awarded the honour.
Her first official engagement is to support the present Lord Lieutenant at the Market Square in Shrewsbury on Thursday 21 April as he lights a fire and reads a message from the Prince of Wales to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.
