Steyning Grammar School commended for excellent GCSE results in 2014
9th April 2015

Steyning Grammar School has received national recognition for the exceptional attainment of its students in the 2014 GCSE examinations.

SSAT, the Schools, Students and Teachers Network, recently undertook its annual in-depth analysis of official Department for Education data on all state-funded schools in England and identified Steyning Grammar School’s success.

The school has qualified for an SSAT Educational Outcomes Award by being in the top 20% of non-selective schools nationally for high average grades achieved by students.

Nick Wergan, Headteacher said: “We are delighted to receive this recognition for our student outcomes - and thank our students, staff, and parents and carers for the hard work, support and commitment needed to achieve these results. We are a highly aspirational school, determined to unlock the full potential in each of our students, and nationally successful outcomes are one of the measures of this success; I am equally proud of the way our students achieve, their commitment to our ethos, and the dynamism and energy of students and staff alike. This award is a significant milestone on our 'journey to excellence'.

The school has been invited to receive their award at a regional celebration ceremony hosted by SSAT at Holland Park School in London on 12 May.

Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT said: “Steyning Grammar School should be congratulated for their exceptional achievement. They have proved themselves to be leading the field in improving GCSE outcomes for their students. There is so much good practice that this school could share, and I hope they will join us at the celebration evening for the chance to network and share strategies with award-winning schools.

“These results are testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and leadership team at Steyning Grammar School, and show what can be achieved when skilled teachers have high expectations and ambition for every young person. I am proud that this school is a member of the SSAT network.”

About SSAT:

SSAT is an independent membership organisation for schools. Our work in helping transform education in England started in 1987. Back then our role was to support and nurture the first City Technology Colleges – the initiative that first proved the value of employers and schools working together to drive up standards. As specialist schools and then the first academies came into being, our brief was extended to supporting them as well. That work, underpinned by our ‘by schools, for schools’ ethos, laid the foundations for many of our activities today…the innovative leadership and teacher CPD programmes, the commitment to thought leadership and research and, of course, the network of school leaders and innovative teachers which still drives all that we do.

About Steyning Grammar School:

A thriving comprehensive day and boarding school for students ages 11-19 set in the beautiful countryside of the South Downs, with close links to Brighton and the South Coast. The school has an intake in Year 7 and 9 and a successful Sixth Form College, offering both A Levels and the International Baccalaureate. An OfSTED ‘good with outstanding features’, students are extremely keen to learn and this is reflected in good examination results.

Steyning Grammar School has had the proud tradition of boarding provision since 1614. It boasts some of the finest and most modern facilities of any state or private boarding school. Following a three day inspection by Ofsted in October 2012, SGS Boarding was once again judged as 'Outstanding'. Very few schools achieve such a judgement and SGS Boarding is the first Outstanding State Boarding School in the country to achieve this grade under the new inspection framework.  The inspection report reinforces the popularity of Steyning Grammar School as demand from the UK, as well as overseas, continues to rise. The education is free to parents and families with just the very modest boarding costs to cover.
