For some youngsters, the half-term break means feet up and forget about work for a short time. However, not for 18 year old Loretto pupil, Emily Chang.
Emily, from Taiwan and a boarder at Loretto School, spent her half-term on work experience with KPMG, one of the largest professional services companies in the world, employing over 150,000. She spent the week in the KPMG Edinburgh office shadowing KPMG employee, Susie Marsh.
Emily commented, “My work experience week at KPMG provided me with some invaluable experiences and has fuelled my passion to follow a career in Accountancy. Working in a business environment was very new to me and, although I was initially nervous, everyone was really friendly and kind I quickly settled in. There was a real team spirit with all members of my team taking time to work with me and share their knowledge.
The placement also provided me with the opportunity to apply my economics and accountancy knowledge to real world situations. Whilst I realised real-life financial reports are far more complicated than what we learn in school I was able to build on my subject knowledge and by the end of the week I had become comfortable analysing them. My week ended with me being given the opportunity to present to a senior partner in the firm on what I had learnt. The feedback I received whilst doing this was excellent and really proved to me the importance of the presentation skills I have been taught at Loretto.”
