More House School

Against the odds, local pupils with learning difficulties relating to literacy, language-skills, attention and motor-skills have triumphed in their GCSE and equivalent BTEC qualifications, beating national averages.

Students at the United Kingdom’s largest school for children with special educational needs, More House School in Frensham, were celebrating this week as they opened their results to discover they had beaten the national average for good passes (grades 9 to 4) by more than 12 percentage points. In doing so, many achieved what they and their parents had never thought possible.

Headmaster, Jonathan Hetherington, explained that many of More House’s students first arrive at the school fearing they will never succeed in education, and frightened by the future. “They lack self-esteem and confidence, and we help them to discover where their strengths lie, and to overcome the barriers to learning, unlocking their potential”.

The school’s 68 Year Eleven students achieved 77% of GCSE and BTEC results at grades 9 to 4, or the BTEC equivalent of Distinction* to Level 2 Pass. 77% of More House’s candidates have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) evidencing higher levels of special educational needs.

The pupils also beat the national statistics for good passes in Mathematics, with 71% achieving grades 9 to 4. 62% achieved a grade 4 or higher in English Language, again higher than the national statistic, and 81% secured at least one good pass in a science.

Mr Hetherington spoke of the importance of all subject teachers understanding the difficulties experienced by neurodiverse learners, and praised the skill and dedication of More House’s staff, which includes Speech and Language therapists, Occupational therapists and Literacy tutors. Half of More House’s Year Eleven cohort gained at least one grade 9 to 7 or the BTEC equivalent of Distinction* to Distinction (equivalent to the old categories of A* and A). All students study a breadth of GCSEs, choosing from more than twenty subjects.

One parent reported “before he came to More House, we were advised by his previous school that our son should not sit GCSEs; but we are thrilled by his achieving a grade 8, three grade 7s, two grade 6s, a grade 5, and a BTEC Distinction*!” More House School was inspected by Ofsted in March 2023, and awarded the highest possible grade, Outstanding, in every judgement area, for both the school, and the boarding provisions. The school is a registered charity and provides specialist training for teachers, SENCos and school leaders locally and across the country, both for state-maintained schools and in the independent sector. The school has nearly 500 pupils on-roll, aged 8 to 18. Last week, it also celebrated its Sixth Form’s A’ Level results, with 81% of its leavers progressing to university.

Bedales Schools

Bedales students are celebrating after the publication of GCSE and Bedales Assessed Course (BAC) results. Eight students achieved a clean sweep of at least nine grades 9/8 (equivalent to A*), and a further 13 students achieved at least nine grades 9-7 (equivalent to A*-A); of these students, 12 attended Bedales Prep prior to progressing to Bedales Senior. As a cohort, the grades are very much in line with their predecessors in 2019, demonstrating how they have bounced back in the face of considerable challenges over the past two years.

Bedales’ unique curriculum means that students take a combination of the school’s own BACs combined with I/GCSEs in five core subjects. Introduced in 2006, BACs are well established, and involve a broader range of content, choice and assessment methods than the traditional GCSE, enabling students to pursue their interests and talents. BACs benefit from annual external validation by experienced moderators and are recognised as a qualification by universities.

Will Goldsmith, Head of Bedales, commented: “After a difficult start to their BAC/GCSE courses, the students have really risen to the challenge this summer. I’m delighted to see how, for so many of them, the extra work and effort they put in during the run-up to the exams and end of course assessments has paid off. They should be rightly proud of their achievement and how it sets them up for success in their learning at Sixth Form.”

Bedales students in Block 4 (Year 10) can choose from the following BAC options: Ancient Civilisations; Art; Dance; Design (Product or Fashion); Digital Game Design; English Literature; Geography; Global Awareness; History; Music; Philosophy, Religion & Ethics; Outdoor Work; Sports Science and Theatre Studies.

Bedales is looking seriously into reducing the number of GCSEs further, bringing more subjects into the BACs. Currently, the school retains a core of five IGCSE/GCSEs in English Language, Mathematics, Double or Triple Science and a Modern Foreign Language, while also offering BACs as an alternative to GCSE for increased depth, more active learning and stimulating material, less prescriptive syllabuses and a wider range of assessments including group and individual projects, presentations, essays and portfolios in addition to written examinations.

Old Swinford Hospital

Pupils at Old Swinford Hospital are today celebrating a good set of GCSE results and are now looking forward to joining the Sixth Form at OSH and other post-16 institutions.

Mathematics and Science grades this year are particularly strong.  Half of the GCSE grades in Maths, Biology and Chemistry papers are grades 7-9, whilst three quarters of Physics grades came in at 7-9.  Overall, 89.3% of students have achieved Grades 4-9 which is significantly highly than the national average.

This year also saw the first cohort of students take GCSE Chinese, where all pupils sitting the exams were non-native speakers and studied Chinese from scratch since Year 7.  Here, a quarter of all grades were 7-9.

Tom Sparks, who achieved a Grade 9 in Chinese, has been awarded 9s in seven other subjects plus an A in his Advanced Mathematics Qualification.  Tom also managed to reduce his golf handicap during this GSCEs whilst successfully competing for Staffordshire Boys.

School hockey goalkeeper Will Herbert was awarded seven Grade 9s and now moves with Tom on to the OSH Sixth Form.  Joining them will be footballers Harry Morgan, Chemistry academic prize winner Will Hartshone, and rugby player Hugo Martins with 27 Grade 8s and 9s between them!

Headmaster Paul Kilbride commented: ‘Many congratulations are due to our pupils.  This is a well-deserved set of results achieved by a great bunch of boys.  During their GCSE years they have won national rugby trophies at Twickenham, toured Lake Garda as young musicians and got through the worst of the weather that the UK can throw at them on expeditions with DofE or cadets.  I would also like to thank their teachers who had to begin preparing them for GCSE during the lockdowns of 2021 and the disruption that followed.  We now wish each and every one of our pupils both happiness and success as they move on to further study.’

Leighton Park

Head of Leighton Park School, Matthew Judd, congratulated his Year 11s on their iGCSE/GCSE successes this morning, pleased that the results have bucked the national trend.

With the media focussing on the fall in top grades, our cohort have amazingly achieved more grade 9s this summer than our pre-pandemic 2019 students. Nationally the 2023 grades 9-7 are at 22% whereas Leighton Park’s Year 11s have reached more than 48% as well as 96% grades 9-4 against the national average of 68%.

“Once again it is marvellous to see so many young people fulfilling their potential and achieving some stunning grades.” Matthew enthused, “The students and their teachers have all worked hard to ensure these results are where they should be. Sometimes the press can paint a picture of difficult outcomes but our students have had brilliant results and are well set for both the International Baccalaureate and A Level/BTEC qualifications in our Sixth Form.”

Diana de la Mora, who is excited about studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme next year, was delighted with her grades (seven 9s, 1 eight and an A): “It was a lot of hard work but I’m glad it paid off. I’m glad that my teachers were so supportive. They helped me to achieve what I wanted to and to have the courage to continue studying despite the stress. I’ve chosen to take the IB course for Sixth Form because I truly believe that the IB will give me the greatest chance to develop myself into the individual I strive to be. Gaining the freedom to continue studying many different subjects will not only allow me to enhance and broaden my view of the world but also allow me to immerse myself in a passionate, hard-working group of diverse people.”

The International Baccalaureate course enables students to continue with six subjects over the next two years as well as providing excellent preparation for university through the Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity Activity Service (CAS) compulsory modules. It is a popular choice for students with broad interests, who enjoy project-based learning and who have a global perspective.

Noah Ramos-Galvez, proud of his results which included five 8s and two 7s, agreed, “I was a bit nervous before I opened them but I’m all good now. The teachers have been really helpful for me, and extra sessions were available if they were required. It’s been great. Really supportive.” Noah is looking forward to pursuing Music, Maths, Chemistry and Physics at A Level in the Sixth Form next year.

Hamish Walker, who had to be woken up by his mum to check his grades online, was pleased too. “The teachers have your back here, and my friends have been there for me which helps take my mind off the stress.” he reflected.

Youssef El-Nagar who took his Arabic GCSE two years early was excited to have achieved a grade 9. Proud mum, Amal commented, “He’s very happy, he’s done so well. He’s taken a shot and I think he’s killed it!”

Students sitting the Further Mathematics Standard Qualification (FMSQ), which carries 10 UCAS points and offers the equivalent challenge of an AS level, achieved 75% A-B grades. The opportunity to take the qualification is offered to all students in the top set Maths class and is a popular option amongst our keen Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Maths (STEAM) pupils. Other STEAM subjects which performed well at iGCSE/GCSE grades 9-7 this summer included Geography (80%), DT (67%), Textiles (67%), Physics (64%), Chemistry (63%) and Biology (61%). STEAM is a particular strength of the School with opportunities to get involved with both group and individual projects through the STEAM co-curricular activities. Students experience STEAM outside the curriculum through the wide variety of trips and connections with industry.

The majority of Year 11 progress to the School’s Sixth Form where the entry criteria are five iGCSEs/GCSEs at Grade 6s or above. Leighton Park’s success at Key Stage 5 is recognized by the Government’s league tables for Sixth Form Academic Progress. We are looking forward to the success continuing as we open our new Sixth Form Centre this academic year. The latest figures show Leighton Park to be the top performing school in Berkshire and 27th in England for academic progress, one of only eight schools nationally to appear in the top 100 every year since the league tables began. Leighton Park was also a Finalist in the prestigious Times Educational Supplement (TES) Awards for Independent Senior School of the Year 2023. Academic results are not the only measure of success of course and the School was pleased to win the ISA’s 2022 Award for Pupil Personal Development.

If you are considering studying A Levels, CTEC Sport, BTEC in Digital Film & Video Production or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, the next Sixth Form Open Evening at Leighton Park School is on Tuesday 10th October at 6.30pm and our Annual Open Morning for all entry points is on Saturday 23rd September from 9.00-11.00am.  Book online at www.leightonpark.com/imagine-better or contact Admissions via admissions@leightonpark.com or 0118 987 9608.

After an exceptional set of A Level results, Repton School’s pupils are celebrating their GCSE results after three years of hard work and dedication. While the national grade proportions were lowered, Repton School has bucked the trend and improved year-on-year results. This reflects the professionalism and dedication of the teaching staff as well as the commitment and ambition of the School’s pupils.

Over 61% of entries were awarded grades 7 to 9 (A* to A) and the School could not be more proud of all of those who sat their GCSE exams this year. A significant number of pupils gained more than seven 9’s and this highlights the academic aspiration that pervades Repton School.

Many pupils have achieved academic excellence alongside impressive extracurricular endeavours, from gaining representative sporting honours at the highest level to involvement in music, drama performances, community action groups and STEM activities. All pupils have balanced their academic studies alongside a variety of cocurricular commitments and they should be proud of all that they have accomplished.

Commenting on the results, Repton’s Headmaster, Mark Semmence, said: “Congratulations to all our candidates receiving their GCSE results today. This is the culmination of applied study, perseverance, positivity, and unwavering support from Repton staff. These results demonstrate that whatever passions Reptonians may have, they are supported in every aspect of school life and are well-prepared as they move on to the next stage of their education. This is a true testament to the balanced education that we offer here at Repton. We look forward to welcoming them into our Sixth Form in the new academic year.”

Trent College

Following the announcement of our A level results last week, Year 11 pupils are today celebrating their own academic achievements with the publication of their GCSE results.

Mr Bill Penty, Head of Trent College, said, “We are proud of our pupils for their accomplishments in their GCSE courses. It is their hard work, determination, and personal achievements that we celebrate today. My warmest congratulations go to them all and my thanks go to our dedicated staff who continue to support and encourage our pupils in so many ways.”

“The Government has made it clear that grading has returned to the levels of 2019 and before, so I am pleased by how this year’s results bear such positive comparison with those.”

“Year 11 have achieved a higher percentage of entries awarded at grade 4 and above, and while those achieving the top grades are a decline on last year, they still compare well with pre-covid trends.”

“We look forward to welcoming our pupils back to Trent College next month when they will begin their studies in our vibrant Sixth Form.”

Celebrating their outstanding grades today were:

Freddie Lester has achieved nine grade 9, one grade 8 and one 6. Freddie said “I’m really pleased, I’ve done better than I expected. I was so nervous this morning and I’m pleased to get it over with. The learning support that I have received at Trent has really helped me to achieve these results, which we just didn’t think were possible. I also really wanted to beat my brother’s results!”

Nikil Bhanot has achieved nine grade 9s and two grade 8s and said “I’m so, so happy! I had been feeling really calm but this morning the nerves really kicked in. With all the news in the media about grades being pushed down, I was very nervous. I can now go to study Maths, Chemistry and Biology at A level and pursue my aim of studying Medicine.”

Abigail Culleton achieved six grade 9s, two grade 8s, two grade 7s. “I’m definitely a bit of a perfectionist, and I set my standards really high, so on the whole, I’m pleased with my results. Maybe a tad disappointed with the 7s, but I’ve come to terms with it and I’m quite content overall. Looking ahead, I’m headed to Trent College Sixth Form to tackle A Levels in Business, Spanish, Chemistry, and I’m even looking to take on the LIBF Finance course.

The upcoming years are going to be pretty busy, especially as I’m already thinking about university. I’ve got my eyes on a path that combines Business Management with either Spanish or Fashion. Honestly, I’ve been pondering over courses and A Levels since Year 8. I’ve always been one to set lofty goals for myself, as academic success means a lot to me. I’ve been a planner and organizer since I can remember; I’ve always wanted to structure things well and achieve top grades. It’s all about ensuring a solid career and a promising future.

The excitement is real as I look forward to beginning my A Level journey. Friends who’ve recently left Sixth Form have told me how quickly time flies. Emotions are all over the place right now, but I’m prepared to embrace the challenge and dive into this new chapter with enthusiasm.”

Daniel Conway achieved eight grade 9s and three grade 8s. “This is very good news, I’m so relieved. I’m so grateful for the constant support of my teachers who have assisted me in achieving these results. Their ongoing support and guidance have really helped to achieve these fantastic results that will help me to go on to a bright future.”

Also celebrating excellent results are:

Henry Crocker achieved 11 GCSEs including four grade 9s, three grade 8s and two grade 7s. Henry said, “I received 9 in all three subjects that I am going to study at A level. I also got a 9 in Physics. I’ve enjoyed my time at Trent and I’m looking forward to continuing into Sixth Form and starting my A levels in Maths, Chemistry and Biology.

Kareena Ghandi achieved 11 GCSEs including three grade 9s, three grade 8s, and three grade 7s. She said “I’m quite proud of myself. I’ve received the results I was expecting, obviously there are some areas where I had hoped to have done better, but overall, I’m pleased with my results.

The help from my teachers throughout my GCSEs has been great, they really helped ensure I stayed on top of my deadlines and if I was dropping below my actual abilities they would help and support me get back on track to what I’m capable of achieving. I’m looking forward to studying for my A levels at Trent College Sixth Form.  I’ll be taking Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics.”

Yusef Al-Habaibeh received five Grade 9s, three Grade 8s and one Grade 7 He said, “I feel fantastic today, I’m very happy with my results and all I have achieved. I’m particularly impressed with my results for my English Language (Grade 9) and Maths (Grade 9). I’m looking forward to continuing my studies in A Level Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Further Maths.

I aspire to go to a leading university to study Medicine to help people with conditions similar to mine, so I am really thrilled this is a step forward in that direction, particularly that I have received Grade 9 in all the selected A level subjects“.

As I have a medical condition which causes me to miss lesson time, my teachers worked with me to understand the support I needed. The teachers at Trent College spent extra time talking through subjects with me so I understood what was required when I needed to complete work from home.

Yusef’s family are equally proud and said:

“Yusef has had an outstanding performance with his GCSE results, we are really pleased with his results. Trent College has worked very closely with us as a family to ensure they understood Yusef’s medical condition and have proactively worked with us to implement support plans to ensure Yusef could study partly at home and ultimately sit his examinations under conditions that supported his needs. We are grateful for the way Trent College has responded to our needs as a family.”

Trent College provides a challenging and rewarding Sixth Form experience, where supportive teachers and flexible boarding options enable pupils to achieve their full potential.

Join us on our Whole School Open Morning on Saturday 7 October to find out more about Trent College’s thriving Sixth Form and the broad range of academic and extra-curricular opportunities and friendly community that make our excellent rated school.

King’s Ely

STUDENTS at King’s Ely have achieved excellent GCSE results, with over a quarter of all grades being the highest 9s-8s, equivalent to the old A*.

Pupils’ hard work and determination, combined with unwavering support from their teachers and families, has resulted in a 95% pass rate, with almost a half of results at Grades 9-7 (the old A*-A). Their results successfully propel virtually all candidates onto the Sixth Form courses of their choice, with a large majority of students choosing to stay at King’s Ely for A-Levels.

These GCSE results come just a week after almost all of King’s Ely’s Year 13 students, who were aiming for university, achieved the grades needed to secure places at their first choice. This year, Sixth Form leavers will be studying at 46 different institutions, not just in the UK, but across the globe, and in courses as diverse as Medicine to Acting.

Jonathan Shaw, Head of King’s Ely Senior, said: “Congratulations and well done to everyone who received their GCSE exam results today. As a school, we are delighted with the very many individual stories of success, where pupils have exceeded their own personal expectations. Many have exceptional results by any benchmark, and we are very proud of their achievements. I am extremely grateful to our teachers who frequently go the extra mile to help pupils in their preparation for these exams, and to our parents for their patience and support throughout the exam season.

“Exam results are only one aspect of school life, and I am conscious that many pupils excel in other areas beyond the classroom. Regardless of any individual outcome today, I am confident all pupils are prepared with both the values and skills for the next step in their educational journey. We are particularly pleased that the vast majority of Year 11 pupils are staying at King’s Ely to continue their Sixth Form studies; we will have our largest ever Sixth Form in this coming academic year. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in September and to those who are leaving, I wish them all the very best for the next stage of their studies.”

Two King’s Ely students have achieved all Grade 9s in their full courses this year – congratulations to Anna Ost and Charlotte Senior. Sixteen pupils are celebrating achieving Grades 9-8 in at least seven of their subjects. Congratulations to: Harriet Bailey, Polly Casey, Ciara Comley, Yanki Ertem, Leo Good, Thomas Hensman, Anya Hjaltun-Rayner, Eleanor Kittoe, Edward Lacey, Wing Man Lai, Angus MacPherson, Alexander New, Sophie Parsons, Imogen Ryan, Zara Stevens, and Edith Thomson.

Edward Lacey joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 7. He will be studying Biology, Chemistry, and Religious Studies at A-Level, and hopes to go on to study Veterinary Science at university. Edward said: “I am very pleased with my results, and I am looking forward to Sixth Form here at King’s. It will be great to study subjects that I really enjoy, in a fantastic environment, and with teachers who are all so dedicated. I love the Sports Department here at King’s too, and I am looking forward to wearing a suit every day!”

Eleanor (Nell) Kittoe is studying History, English Literature, Maths, and Textiles for her A-Levels. She joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 5. Nell said: “I am not entirely sure what I want to do career wise yet, but probably something involving Textiles and/or English; something creative. That is what I love about King’s – everything is creative, the Textiles Department is amazing, the classes are small, and my teachers all know exactly how I learn best.”

Leo Good joined King’s Ely Nursery in 2009. He hopes to pursue a career in banking or law, and is studying Maths, Further Maths, History, and Politics at A-Level. Leo said: “I worked hard for my GCSEs, but I am still pleasantly surprised with my results. I am excited for Sixth Form at King’s. I am an Ely Scheme Outdoor Education Instructor here, so I am looking forward to continuing with that, as well as studying with great people in a brilliant environment.”

As is reflective of an all-round, enriched education, King’s Ely students have studied and achieved in a wide variety of GCSE subjects. Creative subjects, for which King’s Ely is internationally renowned, were strong once again this year, with 100% of students securing Grades 9-7 in Music and Latin, and 100% of students achieving Grades 9-6 in Drama and Theatre, Textiles, and Fine Art. Over half of students’ results in Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Further Maths, History, and Spanish were at least a Grade 7.

Thirty pupils from all corners of the globe also received their results today having studied the one-year IGCSE programme at King’s Ely. The two-term intensive course sees young people studying in their non-native speaking language, and the average number of subjects taken is six. King’s Ely is delighted to report another excellent set of IGCSE grades, with more than a quarter of results achieved being Grades 9-8.

Special mention must go to Allison Chiu, who achieved Grade 9s in all seven of her GCSE subjects, which includes Spanish; her third language. Kevin Cheung, Alina Savchuk, and David Lin achieved an average of Grade 8.8 across their GCSE subjects. Eighteen of King’s Ely’s IGCSE students are staying at the school for their A-Level studies.

John Attwater, Principal of King’s Ely, said: “Every one of these results is a reflection of hard work and a return to exam conditions with no quarter given for the disruption these children faced in their education in Years 8 and 9. In this light, our cohort can be very proud of themselves that they have done at least as well as previous generations, and can look forward to their chosen Sixth Form studies with confidence. I am delighted that as term starts in September our Sixth Form will be full of such well-motivated and genuinely nice people, to be joined by others from all over the world seeking the King’s Ely experience.”

King’s Ely received an ‘excellent’ rating in all areas following its latest ISI Inspection, recognising the highest levels of academic rigour, pastoral care, and opportunities outside the classroom. To discover more about opportunities at King’s Ely, please visit: www.kingsely.org

Scarborough College

Scarborough College is celebrating outstanding GCSE results today.  In the largest cohort for many years, over 45% of all students were awarded grades A* and A (9-7).  The overall pass rate for grades 9-4 was 92%.

Students, their parents and staff of the College came together this morning to find out their GCSE results amid feelings of anticipation and excitement.  Students and teachers have been working exceptionally hard and there are many individual results to celebrate.

Amongst the wonderful results, the College would like to highlight the efforts of Scarborough day student Yoyo Wang, who was awarded 10 straight 9’s.  There are a large number of students achieving a value added of two points or more and Scarborough College would like to give special mentions to students such as Kate Barker, Lucy Barker, Sophia Ibbott-Cook. Shalom Ajayi, Bobby Watts, Eva Gorski, Toby Mcturk, Emma Guthrie, Taptap Chiemchanya, Harriet Swiers and Markus Miklauschina who achieved exceptional grades with almost exclusively grade 8s and 9s.

Once again, all three sciences recorded superb value added results as well as impressive grades, with over 80% of students earning grades 7-9.  This year the Modern Foreign Languages department achieved a value added of 1.9 grades per student and a record number of 9s. The History department also secured  a number of students achieving grades 8-9 following on from their exceptional IB results. However, there was much to celebrate throughout the school with students excelling across the board both academically and in all areas of school life.

Head of Middle Tier, Mr Pete White, who took up this role for the first time in 2022, commented: ‘I am thrilled that the hard work and dedication of all of Year 11 has paid off with an excellent set of GCSE results.  I also want to praise the pastoral team and academic staff who have supported our students every step of the way.  This has been a memorable cohort, not just as my first as Head of Middle Tier, but also because of how well they have come together and spurred each other on throughout their GCSE years.  Well done – we are so proud of you all!’

Mr Guy Emmett, Headmaster at Scarborough College, added: ‘Congratulations to each student for their achievements and hard work. This morning was full of smiles and reflected the joy we all felt as they opened their envelopes to reveal their grades. They have excelled due to their diligence but also due to the support of their families and teachers. I am very proud to work with these students, and with colleagues who inspire and always go the extra mile for their classes. ’

Tudor Hall School

Tudor girls’ aim higher approach leads to impressive GCSE outcomes Tudor Hall girls are celebrating GCSE success today, with over a quarter of results awarded the top grades of 9-8 and nearly half being graded 9-7. When set against the national picture, Tudor girls have achieved almost double the percentage of grades 9-7 for girls nationally, and above the independent school average for all pupils. Tudor girls have aimed high and been taught by subject specialists who are experts in girls’ education and who understand the way in which girls learn best. Girls have shown excellence in creative arts, with just under half of Art entries and almost a third of Textiles entries awarded a Grade 9. Additionally, one pupil has been named one of OCR examination board’s highest performers in Textiles; this is an impressive achievement and one of which we are extremely proud. Languages at Tudor continue to thrive, with 100% of Latin entries and 42.9% of Spanish entries awarded a grade 9 or 8.

Headmistress, Julie Lodrick commented:
‘We are thrilled to celebrate our girls’ successes today; they should be justly proud of their achievements at school since the beginning of their GCSE journey three years ago, at the height of the pandemic. Their hard work has secured them results that enable them to progress with confidence to Sixth Form study and place them in a strong position to embark on their chosen A level courses, whether scientific, linguistic or creative. The majority of our girls remain with us for Sixth Form, and we look forward to supporting them towards their future pathways, which are as individual as the girls themselves.’

Individual success
Ruby, who achieved 10 passes at grades 9-7, said, ‘Although the last two years have been challenging, I am lucky to have been surrounded by such an inspiring group of people, not only my friends, but also my subject teachers. Finding new ways to revise and study has made me hopeful that the next two years studying my A levels (History, English and French) will be enjoyable and successful.’
Talëtha achieved 9 passes at grades 9-7; she said, ‘I am delighted with the grades that I have achieved and thanks to all my teachers for the amazing support I have had over the last few months.’ Talëtha will begin A levels in Art, Geography and Economics in September.
Pippa achieved 10 passes at grades 9-8 and said, ‘I am really proud of my results and very grateful to all my amazing teachers for their help. I am looking forward to starting my A levels in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in September.’
With 9 passes at grades 9-8, Froggy said. ‘I am thrilled with my results and proud of what I have achieved. I am grateful to the school and my teachers for helping me to achieve my results and am looking forward to studying Maths, Politics and Geography A levels next year.’

Mayfield School

Mayfield, the leading Catholic independent day and boarding school for girls, is celebrating an impressive set of GCSE results, with one in four of grades awarded being the top grade (grade 9). Mayfield’s Year 11 girls achieved exceptional results in Further Maths and IGCSE English, with over half being awarded the top grade 9. In addition, 43% of students taking History were awarded a grade 9. Students also excelled in Science, with over 25% of the cohort awarded a grade 9 in Biology, Chemistry,
and Physics.

Mayfield’s Head, Jonathan Forster, commented: “I am delighted by these exceptional results, especially so given our Year 11 girls’ education was severely affected by the pandemic. There were 15 subjects where over half the students achieved an 8 or 9, including modern languages, creative and performing arts. These results are testimony to the hard work of our girls and the support and encouragement they have received from their teachers.” Katie and Katrina both achieved the top grade in all 11 of their GCSE subjects. Katrina, who is a regular at Mayfield’s Algebra Club, said: “I was overjoyed when I received my results. I would love to say a big thank you to my family and friends for supporting me throughout, and to all the teachers who have helped me through my GCSE journey at Mayfield, always there to answer my questions and mark my essays. It’s a lot of hard work, but I know it has paid off!” Rosie, who won an award at last year’s Model United Nations Conference in Poland for her debating skills
and had a leading role in Mayfield’s recent production of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’, achieved nine grade 9s and two grade 8s. She said: “I joined Mayfield in Year 7 with a hunger for knowledge and an enthusiasm to learn. Throughout my five years at the school, I have been supported through my academics, encouraged to pursue a myriad of opportunities, and inspired by the excellent teachers and staff. I am thrilled with my exam results and I am also so grateful for the person Mayfield has helped me to become: a woman with an inquisitive mind, who can be empathetic but is also unafraid to take up space and share her views on the world.”

Tunbridge Wells twins, Francesca and Sophia, who joined Mayfield in Year 10, achieved a clean sweep of grades 9-7 across all their GCSEs. Sophie said: “I’m so happy with my results today, and I’m super excited to begin my A levels. Apart from all of the support from my teachers, I think what makes Mayfield so special is the opportunities that it has brought me outside of my studies, like Model United Nations and Drama Club.” Francesca added: “I’m very pleased to get my results today and I’m excited to be going into the Sixth Form at Mayfield, where I’ll be studying Maths, Economics, Chemistry and Psychology. I’m
grateful for all of the additional academic support outside of the classroom and have enjoyed being part of the sport’s teams.”
Head Jonathan Forster was also particularly pleased that Kseniia, who joined Mayfield at the end of Year 10 on a full bursary after leaving her homeland – Ukraine – due to war, achieved grades 9-7 across all her GCSE exams. He went on to say: “As they move into the Sixth Form, the girls have many more opportunities to learn life skills, especially through all the leadership opportunities available, whether that be as a subject ambassador, mentoring younger girls, or taking on a prefect role. Each girl is encouraged to make a tangible difference in her own way. Our Sixth Formers enjoy greater independence and autonomy in their learning, inside and outside the classroom, helping to ensure they achieve not only the highest grades, but also the best possible
preparation for life after school. I look forward to following their progress as they move into the Sixth Form

Adcote School

Students at Adcote School are celebrating again today with over a third of all grades awarded to Year 11 achieving grade 8 or 9 (A*) – well above the national average of 12%.

A delighted Mrs Browne said: “Over half of all grades awarded to Year 11 this year accomplished grades 9-7 (A*/A).

These results really do bring a tear to the eye in the best way possible. In the context of everything this cohort has had to contend with regarding the pandemic, these results are stunningly good.

We are thrilled that our number of the very top grades (levels 9-8, the old A* equivalent) has risen significantly from last year by 7% to 36%, but importantly, there has been an incredible increase of 24% from pre-pandemic 2019 results. Our number of 9-7 grades (A*/A) has also increased from last year by 12% to 53%.

To achieve these grades in the face of a well-published national decline in the number of A*/A grades awarded is thrilling and a full reflection of the dedication of our students and staff. These exceptional results are truly well-deserved and we send our congratulations to all students.”

Adcote School is a non-selective, independent day and boarding school in Little Ness, Shrewsbury for students aged 7-18, where the unique CLEAR learning programme teaches students the core skills of confidence, leadership, engagement, achievement and resilience, supporting them to thrive and contribute to society.

Truro School

Following on from the success of our A-Level cohort last week, Truro School has been celebrating GCSE achievements with the 5th Year (Year 11) cohort, who have achieved more than double the national percentage of grades 9-7, with fantastic achievements across the full range of subjects and abilities in the School.

Mr Andy Johnson, Head at Truro School said, “We are immensely proud of the range and diversity of educational journeys undertaken by our lower and middle School. Today is an opportunity to celebrate the academic successes that are vital to our pupils being able to continue those journeys on the courses of their own choice, as well as to commend our pupils for their achievements alongside and beyond their studies too.”

On a day when academic results are awarded, it is right to applaud that our most academic pupils continue to excel. Fifteen pupils have achieved at least nine of the top grades of 8 or 9, including some who have achieved grade 9s in every subject taken.

Rebecca is one such pupil, achieving a fantastic ten grade 9s. Having been at Truro School since the 1st Year (Year 7), Rebecca credits the amazing teachers who have supported her at the school. Her mum, Anna Chellamuthu, tells us, “Truro School has been incredibly supportive throughout her time here. They foster an atmosphere to help pupils to do their best without super amounts of pressure.”

Furthermore, the pupils who were awarded Diploma Scholarships for our Sixth Form have gone on to average 85% of grades at 9-7. This is especially pleasing as the Diploma Scholarship is awarded for more than just academic potential; it exists to nurture the wider talents and interests that ensure our Sixth Form stays diverse and dynamic, and an environment in which pupils with ambition can be supported to thrive.

One scholar, Elowyn, who achieved two grade 8s and eight grade 9s had spent last night in A&E with a suspected fractured rib but was “really relieved and really happy” today to have been given both the all clear, and an outstanding set of GCSE results just a few hours later. She will be studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths at Truro School Sixth Form. “It felt right for me to stay at Truro School. I can do what I want to do here better than anywhere else.”

Elowyn’s father, Richard Parris remarked, “Elowyn has been at Truro School since she was three years old. She has had exceptionally good support from the teachers and has been given endless positivity. It couldn’t be a better school.”

Finn, who is an avid sports enthusiast is another of our Sixth Form Diploma Scholars who performed well today, achieving seven grade 8s and 9s. He shared, “I’m hoping to go into Chemical Engineering, so my A-Level subjects will be Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Geology. I’m really looking forward to joining the Sixth Form and excited about the opportunities that the Diploma will bring. My teachers have been amazing, especially Mrs Vaughan who has been an excellent teacher and really supportive.”

Having achieved an excellent set of ten GCSEs at grade 6 and above, with two grade 7s and three grade 8s, Nia was ecstatic and excited about starting Sixth Form at Truro School. “I did a lot better than I thought I would and am pleasantly surprised! I do a lot of sport and I love that I can stay at Truro School and do all the other bits I enjoy alongside the academic subjects.”

Louis, who is a keen cricketer and rugby player and is also working towards his Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL), got the grades he needed to pursue A-Levels in Maths, Geography and Business at Truro School Sixth Form.

His mum, Alex Taylor tells us, “Louis will be nurtured here at Truro School. That’s the difference here; he won’t become lost and will have the grounding to go on to achieve and pursue his other interests.”

The Head, Andy Johnson, continued, “I wish all of these young people bright futures ahead and look forward to welcoming them into our Sixth Form, alongside those joining us from other schools, in September. Well done to you all.

If you would like to know more about learning at Truro School please do visit our website or contact our admissions team. Prospective pupils and their families are warmly invited to join us at our Open Day on Saturday 7 October, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, or our Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 26 September, from 5.00pm to 8.00pm. Taunton School

Taunton School’s Year 11 students have achieved excellent GCSE results this year despite the national trend of declining top grades and a return to 2019, pre-pandemic, grade distributions. An impressive 52% of grades awarded were 9-7, a significant increase in comparison with 2019. These are results of which the whole year can be proud. Amidst the many stories of personal
success, three students managed the extraordinary feat of a clean sweep of 9s. Matilda, Lizzie and Ben achieved an astonishing ten grade 9s each in their exams. Whilst across the school 52% of GCSEs were graded at 9-7, in Music an outstanding 100% of
grades were 9-7 and a remarkable 95% of Biology grades were awarded a 9-7. Overall, 17% of all grades awarded were a 9 and a third of results were a 9-8 (A*).

Taunton School’s highest achievers were:
 Matilda Ruthven, Lizzie K, Ben Seddon 10 x 9s
 Oscar B, Rosie Seddon, Lily Bramston 8 x 9s, 1 x 8, 1 x 7
 Szymon W 6 x 9s, 3 x 8s
 Kamilya B 7 x 9s, 1 8, 1 x 7

Headmaster James Johnson said: “I am extremely proud of the hard work and determination our Year 11 students have shown throughout the two-year GCSE programme.” “Amongst the eye-catching, headline figures, we should always be mindful of the numerous examples of individual achievement and personal triumph, with many students celebrating
grades that will have exceeded their expectations and serve as just reward for their perseverance. “Congratulations to the students and to all our staff who have supported them and contributed to this success.” At Taunton School International, 40% of our students achieved grades 9-7, a similar result to the cohort of 2019, a fantastic achievement considering the national downward trend mentioned above.

The top performing international students were:
Will S from China achieving 4 grade 9’s, 2 grade 8’s, 1 grade 7 and 1 grade 5
Sasha K from Russia achieving 1 grade 9, 3 grade 8’s, 3 grade 7’s and 1 grade 5
Huseyn I from Azerbaijan achieving 4 grade 9’s, 2 grade 8’s and 1 grade 6
Omar A from Azerbaijan achieving 3 grade 9’s, 2 grade 8’s and 2 grade 7’s
Florian S from Germany achieving 2 grade 9’s, 1 grade 8, 3 grade 7’s and 1 grade 6

Some great results for several subjects with 100% pass grades – Art, Further Mathematics, Computer Science and Media Studies and 93% in Design Technology. Camilla Bryden, Head of Taunton School International, said: “These results are very pleasing with some students achieving top grades despite the national downward trend. It has been a challenging year for this cohort of international students who are suffering the unfortunate consequences of the lack of consistent education and social interaction due to the pandemic. They should be extremely proud of what they have achieved. All our staff should be congratulated for their efforts in supporting these students achieve their successes.”

Brentwood School

24th August 2023: Brentwood School students today demonstrated how academic ambition, co-curricular endeavour and a spirit of community service offer a winning combination as they collected their GCSE results. Joseph Payne, who proved himself the epitome of the School’s values and won this year’s Society of Old Brentwoods Prize for Virtue, Learning and Manners, secured a clean sweep of top grades, 9s/A*s, a feat even more remarkable given his achievements as a footballer with Colchester United FC (and the school’s 1st XI, which he represented despite being two years younger than the majority of his teammates.)

His achievement was matched by fellow Speech Day prizewinner Achinta Kundra who also scored 72 points (9s/A*s). Achinta, a keen charity advocate who spends time working on behalf of various foodbanks, was recently awarded the school’s Year 11 Food and Nutrition Prize. She was ‘looking forward to the freedom of study with the IB Diploma.’  Joseph, Achinta and many of the GCSE top performers were among Brentwood’s first group of Peer Mentors, a programme which sees older students supporting younger pupils with strategies to improve academic and motivational outcomes. Headmaster Michael Bond said such success ‘proved involvement in community actively helped students academically.’

This year’s GCSE class of 2023 collected their results under the shadow of media headlines predicting 30,000 fewer papers graded 7 or above as qualifications returned to pre-pandemic standards in terms of course content and grading. Like their Year 13 peers, the nation’s 16 year olds went through three national lockdowns when they were in Years 8 and 9. Despite offers to turn professional, Joseph, who will soon be heading off on the school’s pre-season football tour of Portugal, is looking forward to a return to school and, following in the footsteps of famous sporting alumnus Frank Lampard (OB 1985-1995). Proud parents, Mark and Helen, praised their son for putting ‘so much effort into everything he did.’ He could still be a professional footballer but ‘education has to come first.’ Joseph said studying A Levels in Economics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics in Brentwood’s Sixth Form ‘guaranteed his future and gave him a back-up plan.’

Martha Machray (10 grades 8-9), a self-confessed germanophile, was one of only two UK finalists who took part in the Goethe-Institut’s IDO (Internationale Deutscholympiade) in 2022. She was also awarded a Society of Old Brentwoods Prize for Virtue, Learning and Manners. Martha, who is immersed in the Music life of the school, will now join Brentwood’s popular International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Summer rain could not dampen the spirits of CCF Navy cadet Emma Burgess. Musician and chorister Emma, who is just back from the Music Department’s highly-acclaimed Dorset tour, also secured an impressive 10 grades 8-9. With ‘better than expected’ grades, she was looking forward to starting her Spanish, Geography and Psychology A Levels. “I am looking forward to meeting new people, taking new lessons and having more time to study Spanish,” she said.

Also back from Dorset with standing ovations ringing in her ears after performing a stunning duet of Orange Coloured Sky, was singer Charlotte Dewar who deserves another round of applause for 11 grades 8-9. The Peer Mentor team also included Torin De Silva (11 grades 8-9); Sahara Dhir (10 grades 7-9); Elsie Playle (10 grades 7-9); Cyrus Khorshid (8 grades 7-9) and Adaolisa Odukew (9 grades 7-9) all successfully combined community service with academic prowess.

Proud mum and Parents Association (FoBS) stalwart Mrs Machel Kriel was delighted with son Daniel’s of 11 grades 8-9. “We are so thankful to Brentwood School for all their support in helping Daniel develop his potential since Year 3.”

Today’s results followed an excellent set of results at A Level, International Baccalaureate and BTEC, which saw over 80% of students get their first choice destination, and a similar number moving on to a ‘Top 20’ UK university.

Headmaster Michael Bond said: “Year 11 students across the country have had to show determination and resilience in overcoming the unprecedented challenge presented by Covid and the return to pre-pandemic grade distributions. Our GCSE cohort have done so alongside some outstanding contributions to the broader school community and – along with my colleagues who have supported them throughout this journey – they deserve our congratulations. Our three Sixth Form pathways – the International Baccalaureate Diploma, A Levels and BTEC Extended Diploma allow us to help our students onto courses for which they are well suited and we are looking forward to welcoming students into our Lower Sixth where I’m sure they will continue to thrive.”

Queen Mary’s School

Inspiring, confident and independent, the Year 11 pupils at Queen Mary’s School, between Ripon and Thirsk, are celebrating superb GCSE results with over 1 in 4 entries achieving Grade 8 – 9s. This year’s excellent results highlight Value Added scores one grade higher than predictions. Alongside a number of pupils who achieved exceptional results, Deputy Head Girl, Mia, blossomed at Queen Mary’s when she came back to the UK from Canada during the COVID pandemic. With her sights set on Classics at Oxford, her parents are delighted that Mia “found herself and her academic passions at Queen Mary’s”.

As Queen Mary’s tailors education to each individual girl, this is reflected in the wide range of sixth form destinations. These include Shrewsbury School, Uppingham School, Ripon Grammar School, St Peter’s School, Bootham School and the Northern School of Art. Congratulations go to Amelie and Anna who have both been awarded Sport Scholarships to attend Ampleforth College. They have demonstrated their talents across all team and individual sports and Amelie plays for York City Football. Anna has represented the county in Cross Country, has single-handedly raised over £12,000 for Alabare, a charity for the homeless, and has achieved outstanding grades today.

Special congratulations also go to Isabella and Nancy who have attended Queen Mary’s for over 13 years and to Nancy who took an additional GCSE in Spanish a year early achieving a Grade 9. Mrs Carole Cameron, Head of Queen Mary’s School, is delighted. “These marvellous results are a testament to great commitment and talent from pupils and teachers alike, which has allowed the girls to thrive academically and beyond. I am extremely grateful to our staff and proud of every Year 11 pupil.

It is truly heart-warming to witness long-standing Queen Mary’s pupils achieving outstanding grades after many years of dedication. Equally heartening is the transformation in the life prospects of those who have more recently joined our school community. Queen Mary’s ethos, with the aim to balance academic excellence with wonderful all-round opportunities, leads to great success. “As announced by HM Government, the grading of GCSEs in England has been brought back in line with pre-pandemic standards by the examination boards. Queen Mary’s results show increases across the board when compared to 2019 results .Along with excellent academic results, Year 11 pupils displayed sporting, musical and artistic excellence as they thrived both inside and outside of the classroom. Every Year 11 pupil held a significant position of responsibility, serving the school with distinction and gaining leadership skills for the future.

Queen Mary’s offers a broad curriculum, allowing pupils to pursue their interests within small classes designed to facilitate ongoing development and achievement. The next Open Day will take place on Saturday 14 October.

Worksop College

Ballet dancers and Musicians, Actors and Sports Enthusiasts; impressive grades for students this GCSE Results Day. Another day of celebrations at Worksop College as the latest cohort of GCSE students receive their results. With grade boundaries adjusted to pre-pandemic levels, Worksop College pupils have not been phased, with a significant portion exceeding their anticipated grades. Being a broad-ability school that celebrates different skills and abilities, achieving such impressive results is quite the accomplishment.

A proud moment for Max (left) who achieved an impressive string of 9s, 8s, 7s and A*s. He will be using these results to pursue his dreams in theatre, as he heads to Tring Park School for The Performing Arts. Classmate Jacob (middle) was over-the-moon as he opened his results to see As, 9s, 8s and 6s. The results set him up nicely for returning to the college to study Geography, Computer Science and Biology at A Level. Giles (right) was also thrilled with his results, having received A*, 8s and 7s, surpassing all his predicted grades.

Aspiring ballet dancer, Laurena, opened that highly anticipated envelope to 9s, 8s, 7s, 6, 5, and an A; no mean feat considering all her spare time is spent in the studio. As she continues pursuing her career in dance, Laurena will be joining the Sixth Form to study Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Another keen performer is Christian, who has completed his studies alongside winning national awards for playing the marimba, a percussion instrument. He will be taking his A Levels in English Literature, History and Classical Civilisation.

The school was packed with relieved pupils, proud parents, and happy teachers. Daniel’s mum was delighted with his A*s, 8s and 7s, which well exceeded his targets. He will be using these results to join the Sixth Form to study Biology, Chemistry and Geography. Joining him in the Sixth Form is Max, who also achieved impressive results – As, 8s, 7s, and 6s. Classmate Kate received a string of 9s and A*s and is looking forward to her next steps.

Best friends Grace, Jessica, and Kosi came together to celebrate their fantastic achievements. Grace (left) achieved 9’s, 8’s, 7s, As and a 6 and has chosen to study Chemistry, Biology and PE at A Level, which coincide with her ambitions of playing Hockey. Rightfully proud, Headmaster John Price said: “I am thrilled for all our GCSE students on what is a nerve-wracking day for them. They have worked exceptionally hard to get such impressive results – many of them getting higher than they were targeted. I’d like to thank all the staff at Worksop College who have helped get these pupils to where they are today. I’m looking forward to welcoming them back in September, when they will begin their A Levels alongside many new classmates.”

King Williams College

King William’s College is celebrating an excellent set of GCSE/IGCSE results, with its 57 Upper Fifth (Year 11) students achieving an overall pass rate (9-4 or A*-C) of 87%, with 20% of grades at 9/8 or A* and 37% of grades at 9-7 or A*/A.

Despite the national raising of grade boundaries this year, two of our students – Daniel Shepherd and Tilly Neel – both achieved 9/8 or A* in 11 subjects, which is a fantastic achievement.

There has been yet more good news for the Middle Fifth (Year 10) who received their GCSE Religious Studies results. The year group – the largest in the School for many years – is on track for significant exam success next summer.

This follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) success of the Upper Sixth (Year 13) earlier in the summer. The IB exams were the first set of public exams the year group had ever sat and nine of these students achieved a remarkable 40 points or more.

Principal Joss Buchanan said: “Overall, our Upper Fifth has not had the easiest of journeys through the school – three times they were in lockdown when they were in the Upper Fourth and Lower Fifth – and they deserve enormous credit for having shown such commitment and resilience. I am delighted that their hard work has paid off with such a strong set of results. I would like to especially congratulate those students who were studying in their second language and those who joined us partway through the courses.

“It has been a uniquely challenging few years, but together with the IB results back in July, it has been a very successful summer.”

Shebbear College

There was a fantastic atmosphere at Shebbear College this morning as Form 5 (Year 11) students celebrated an excellent set of GCSE results with friends, parents and teachers!

In a year where the proportion of candidates receiving the highest grades has fallen nationally, students at Shebbear have found that their hard work has paid off with many achieving outstanding results across all subjects, opening up exciting opportunities for the future.

Alice Hunkin, from Torrington, was thrilled to have achieved an incredible twelve Grade 9s in all subjects. “I was so nervous, I felt really sick as I came into school. I worked hard but didn’t really expect to achieve all 9s so I’m surprised but very happy!” Alice is planning to study A-Level maths, chemistry and either biology or physics in the Sixth Form at Shebbear. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do after A-Levels, but Medicine is a strong possibility.”

Sebastian Crookes, from Holsworthy, is also celebrating today after gaining an impressive ten Grade 9s (including Computer Science which he took a year early) and two Grade 8s. “I’m very pleased with my results,” he said, “I was very nervous this morning and my heart wouldn’t stop beating until the moment I opened my envelope and saw my results, which was a massive relief! I’m going to study four A-Levels at Shebbear next year – maths, further maths, computer science and physics.” Sebastian, who is also a talented musician, having recently achieved Grade 7 distinction in Piano, is planning to study Computer Science at university after his A-Levels.

Three students, Lily Down, Darcey Grey and Beth Tibble, travelled back to Devon this week to receive their GCSE results, having spent the summer in Australia! The girls have had the fantastic opportunity to take part in Shebbear College’s reciprocal sport exchange programme in partnership with Canberra Grammar School, an initiative offered to Year 11 students each year.Reflecting back over the summer, Lily said, “Taking my GCSEs seems so long ago as I’ve been in Australia all summer! It’s been really cool getting to know a new community and a new school and the Australian girls are on their way to England as we speak, so I’m really looking forward to introducing them to Shebbear!”As for her results, Lily commented that she was feeling a mixture of relief and excitement; “I’m very pleased, as I passed everything and I’m excited to be studying Philosophy, Music and Drama A-Levels in the Sixth Form in September.”

Charlie Jenkins, Head at Shebbear College, said “I’m really pleased and proud of all our students and it was fantastic to see so many happy faces this morning! This year group have worked really hard across all subjects and it’s great to see so many of them achieving their personal best.

I wish them all the best for the future and I’m looking forward to seeing many of them return to Shebbear for the Sixth Form in a couple of weeks, when we have our biggest Lower Sixth cohort since before the pandemic. A huge thank you to our brilliant team of teachers, who have been a big part of this success, and well done everyone!”

Millfield School

Community hero Ella Osborne is Millfield’s highest achieving student this results day, with nine 9s and an A in Additional Maths (The highest grade available). The 16-year-old from Teignmouth, Devon joined Millfield as a boarder in Year 9 and is a passionate charity worker. Whilst studying for her exams, Ella volunteers at her local youth centre during the holidays on Friday nights and works with a local charity called ‘Assist’ to help raise money and provide care to older people and those with disabilities.

Last year she spent the 10-week summer break caring for a child with special needs. She said, “I looked after a boy with autism and each week throughout the summer we took him to different places such as the beach and play parks. It would be something I’d love to do again. It was amazing getting to see his face light up with joy when he was happy. Doing this made me want to do more volunteer work in my local community. I like helping people and find volunteering very rewarding and it helped me achieve both my bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.”

Throughout the year Ella has taken part in beach cleans, multiple community events, volunteered at her local library and regularly serves cream teas at a local retirement home. Ella is also an accomplished swimmer and a keen academic. She was selected for the Swim England Phase One Programme and has taken part in Maths and Languages Olympiads. She also enjoys trampolining and competed in the Southwest Regional School Trampolining Championships. Ella is also a member of Millfield’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF).

Initially joining Millfield to swim, Ella enjoyed trying out new sports on offer at Millfield, she said, “I joined Millfield in Year 9 to swim, however, I got the chance to try out new sports, and a wide range of activities such as trampolining and Water Polo.” Ella is able to balance her academics alongside her other commitments, she said, “I originally joined Millfield so I could balance my academics and swimming more effectively, before Millfield my family had to transport me around everywhere for school and different clubs. After visiting the campus, I knew that I wanted to go to Millfield because I loved how welcoming the school was.”

An aspiring dentist, she plans to take A level biology, chemistry, and PE and will continue her charity work, volunteering at an animal shelter next summer. Ella said, “With the help of my teachers, I’ve not only enjoyed my experience at Millfield so far, but I have developed a love for my subjects and learning. I look forward to my next two years in Sixth Form, as I’ll be able to delve into my studies further and achieve whatever my future entails.”

Despite this, they have overcome these challenges with resilience, relentlessness and through an excellent, symbiotic relationship with their teachers. I am confident that, with these results, they will all progress onto their chosen establishment for sixth form and continue to seize and maximise the opportunities that life presents them, just as they have at Boundary Oak School.”

This year’s results were ahead of the school’s performance in 2019 and the school is extremely proud of the achievements of all pupils with an astonishing 14 pupils achieving a clean sweep of ten or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 8.

Jeremy Walker, Head Master says: “What a day for our fantastic Fifth Form and huge congratulations to them and their
teachers. They can take great pride in everything they have achieved, and we are all thrilled with their results today. Their positivity and commitment to all aspects of school life is admirable and we are delighted to celebrate their academic achievements alongside all they contribute to the life of the school. I repeat my thanks to my dedicated colleagues who provide inspirational teaching and unwavering support to every pupil. I also thank parents for working in partnership with us to support their children, together as a strong community. Our talented Fifth Form pupils have already made such valuable and diverse contributions to life at St Peter’s School, focused on their academic and co-curricular activities whilst developing strong friendships and having an enormous amount of fun! Now they are taking their next step to Sixth Form and will be joined by new pupils from other schools, we look forward to seeing their skills, values and interests develop even further.”

There have been many exceptional individual performances, including: Alice who showed her all-round talents with an astounding twelve grade 9 GCSEs, one of only a handful in the country to attain such results. Alice is a consistently persuasive
member of the Debating team, being part of the team that reached the National Finals of the ESU Schools’ Mace Debating Competition in London, after success at the regional finals. She said, “It was amazing to see my hard work pay off. None of this would have happened without fantastic support from my teachers and family.” Harry was delighted to achieve an astonishing eleven 9s and an 8. He was awarded the Fifth Form Prize for Academic Merit at our recent Commemoration Day and has
represented the First Team in rugby and is a keen hockey player. Edward was pleased with his amazing ten 9s. His musical contributions in school have been significant as well as his sporting commitments which saw him placed in the Rugby First
Team. He recently wowed the audience playing the complicated ‘Elégie Op 143’, on violin in the Senior Music Festival Final.
Islay did extremely well, achieving nine 9s, an 8 and a 7. She took on the additional challenge of a GCSE in Astronomy through the York Independent State School Partnership. Islay shows prowess in the school’s rowing crews, consistently winning medals as part of a very strong team. She is working towards Silver Duke of Edinburgh award and is an active
member of the School Council. Jimmy was proud of his eight 9s and two 8s. His passion for rowing has developed at school
where he is now training to become a cox. His expertise in music wows audiences whether it is his singing or playing the piano and organ. He said, “I’m really proud of my results. I couldn’t have done it without great teachers and family. I can’t wait for Sixth Form.” Keen cricketer Joshua was pleased with his eight 9s and three 8s. Another cricketer Wills, who captains North of England, and has consistently topped batting averages, was bowledover by his seven 9s and three 8s. August 24, 2023 – 12:22pm

Badminton School

Badminton School Year 11 pupils are today celebrating some outstanding GCSE results. Whilst we congratulate the whole cohort on these fantastic results, there are always individuals who deserve a special mention: Christina, who achieved grade 9 in all her GCSEs, was congratulated by the OCR exam board for being one of the top performers nationally in GCSE Latin, obtaining full marks in each component. More widely, pupils studying Languages were able to celebrate outstanding successes and had clearly benefitted from the range of language opportunities on offer, ranging from in-country homestay visits and language debates, to the hosting of classics debates as part of Badminton’s roles the southwest hub of the Classical Association.

Once again, pupils have showed prowess in the STEM subjects with nearly two thirds of the grades achieved in Science and Maths being at grade 8 or 9. The extracurricular opportunities offered to pupils within STEM enables them to develop not only their skills in these subjects but also a range of wider transferable skills that will be useful as they move on to the next chapter of their education. Annabelle, one of our Science Outreach Programme team members said: “Science Outreach has offered me a unique opportunity where I have been able to present at many festivals such as the Festival of Physics and the UK Big Bang. This has enabled me to develop my communication skills and become a more confident public speaker.”

For many pupils GCSEs are the first chapter in their journey to their chosen career and a time when they start to explore their own passions and learn where their strengths lie. Hannah, who achieved a string of top grades and is now set to study English Literature, Politics and Economics at A Level, said of the experiences of the last two years: “Participating in a mock trial competition was not only interesting, but really eye opening and inspired me to obtain work experience shadowing a barrister
at Bristol Crown Court; I am now hoping to study Law at University.”

Mrs Miles, Head, said: “Our Year 11 pupils should be extremely proud of what they have achieved. Let’s not forget that the normal rhythm of their school life was taken away from them when they were approaching their final term in Year 8, but they have faced up to the disruptions and challenges along the way, supported by our excellent academic and pastoral staff. Alongside their academic achievements, our Year 11 pupils contributed brilliantly to the wider life of the School, whether it be through music, sport, or fund-raising for a myriad of causes. They now turn their thoughts to the start of their A Level courses and I am very much looking forward to seeing them flourish in our Sixth Form from September.”

QE Faculty and QE College have seen outstanding performances from students across both schools, their combined percentage of 7-9(A*/A) grades reaching 63%, and with all students achieving a broad range of qualifications across the curriculum. Head of QE Faculty at Queen Ethelburga’s, Lauren Blakeley, said: ‘All of our staff here at QE are incredibly proud of the results we have seen today from our GCSE students. This goes far beyond the results themselves, we are proud of every individual for achieving their own goals and aspirations. Success for our students at QE is more than teaching them to do well at exams – it encompasses embodying the values they will need beyond their time with us including resilience, confidence and respect. We are delighted to share in the delight of so many achieving what they had hoped for.’

Head of QE College, Steven Turner, said: ‘Year 11 are such a talented group of students and we are so proud of their amazing results. At the start of the last academic year we launched a new whole school revision project where students were introduced to the latest research and techniques regarding the most effective study methods. Our students really embraced this initiative and we have seen the impact in their outstanding results today. These excellent results reflect the ambitious nature of our students, together with the unwavering support of staff and parents. We are truly lucky to have such a superb group of students and look forward to seeing what they can achieve over the next two years in our Sixth Form.’ College student Tommy joined QE as a boarding student at the start of Year 10, adapting quicky to the challenges of life in the College, obtaining 12 grade 9’s at GCSE this summer. Not only is Tommy an outstanding academic but he is incredibly creative, winning the Key Stage 4 Drawing category at the ISA North of England Arts Awards.

Erin joined QE as a boarder at the start of Year 7 and has been an exemplary student ever since. She plays the piano to a high level and has been an essential member of our backstage crew supporting school productions for several years. An outstanding all round academic, Erin has achieved 11 grade 9’s at GCSE. Maria joined QE at the age of seven and has been an outstanding student ever since, successfully achieving 11 grade 9’s at GCSE this summer. Maria is from Ukraine and an outstanding linguist, speaking four languages fluently. She enjoys sport at school and has been a regular member of our successful netball team.

Rotola has flourished since joining QE Faculty in 2021. She joined us with the aspiration of studying medicine at University and today celebrates her first milestone towards that goal, achieving a fabulous set of results including 9-8 in Science and 8s and 7s in her other subjects. She has done this whilst also being a founding member of the Faculty Student Action group this year, shaping the school experience for her peers, and also showing her creative flair with her talents in photography.  Gabriel Lee joined QE Faculty on a one year program for Year 11. He is an incredibly talented sportsman, representing Yorkshire at Rugby, but has also excelled at GCSE with 3 8s achieved in his first year with QE. We cannot wait to see him build upon this success and continue to show all that our PSP student athletes are capable of achieving both in sport and academia.

Brighton College

COLLEGE ON CLOUD 9 AS GCSE RECORD BROKEN

9 is the Most Common Grade at Brighton College

Brighton College pupils are celebrating record results today, with 1,115 grade 9s, more than ever before. The most common grade at A-level last week at Brighton College was an A* and this week at GCSE it is a 9. 45 pupils, an equal number of boys and girls, secured at least nine grade 9s, with 24 gaining an incredible 10, 11 or 12 9s.

Science leads the way at the school, with 90% of science pupils getting a 9 and over 300 9s achieved in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Amongst those achieving an amazing 12 grade 9s was Arjun Kolani, Team GB chess champion, who won the U14 British Chess Championship in 2021 and has been playing for the Sussex first team in the 4 Nations Chess League.

Another Team GB champion, Keira Donnelly-Sallows, is celebrating after achieving 11 grade 9s. Ranked 2nd in the British Cadet Women’s Sabre (U17), Keira has her sights set on competing in the Brisbane 2032 Summer Olympics. Following in the footsteps of Old Brightonian and England rugby star Marcus Smith, pupil Alex Stubbs also got a great set of results. He was awarded Outstanding player of the Tournament when the Brighton College won the U16 All England National 7s title earlier this year. Alex is playing for Harlequins U17s against Newcastle Falcons while his peers are collecting their results from school!

Head Master, Richard Cairns, is delighted: “We are thrilled for all of them – though perhaps the loudest whoops of joy have been for those who have not always found academic matters straightforward but have secured the 7s, 8s and 9s that they once thought were impossible. It reflects so well on the aspirational culture of the school and the inspirational nature of its teaching body.”

Royal Hospital School

Top GCSE Grade Bonanza for RHS pupils!

The Royal Hospital School is celebrating a bumper year of grade 9s, with pupils gaining 101 grade 9s between them: the largest number of 9s achieved by a RHS cohort. This is a significant achievement for this broad ability and diverse cohort, whose GCSE foundation years were badly affected by the pandemic. 91% of exams taken achieved 9-4 grades, higher than in 2019, considered to be the last normal year of results. A particular highlight were our GCSE Language results in Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish, where over half were graded 8 or 9 (55%).

Simon Lockyer, Headmaster, comments: “I am really delighted for our 2023 GCSE cohort, who have had to navigate the disruption to some of their most formative educational years. RHS is proud to recruit pupils from diverse backgrounds, which is what makes our school so special; to give pupils the opportunity and support to achieve to their full potential and to provide a platform for their post-16 education takes the support and dedication of teachers as well as a team of other colleagues who share a belief and interest in developing our pupils.

I am immensely proud of all that they have achieved both academically and through their wider commitment to life at RHS, with many balancing their academic work with involvement in sport, music, sailing, debating and the numerous other opportunities available here at the school. We look forward to welcoming the vast majority back to join us in the Sixth Form, which is often see as the most memorable and exciting two years”.

The school’s top performer was Molly Nichols, from Manningtree, who achieved an incredible clean sweep of ten grade 9s in her GCSEs.

Molly achieved the top grade in all her GCSEs (Biology, Chemistry, Design & Technology, English Language, English Literature, Geography, History, Latin, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish) and will be going on to study A Levels in Classical Civilisation, Geography and Mathematics at RHS Sixth Form in September.

Molly is currently on holiday in Spain and comments “I am so pleased with my results and look forward to celebrating with my family on a sunset cruise this evening!”

An Academic, Sport and Design & Technology Scholar, Molly is a true all-rounder, balancing her studies with playing in the school hockey, netball and horse-riding teams. A particular highlight has been representing the school at The Royal Windsor Horse Show earlier this year. She was also nominated for and applied for a prestigious Arkwright scholarship due to her strength and interest in STEM subjects.

Molly also has a real passion for playing the flute, in which she has achieved Grade 8, and enjoys playing in the School Flute Ensemble and Band.

Jesse Dallas, from Maldon, is the school’s top performing boy this year, having gained a fabulous set of GCSEs results, all graded 8s and 9s. He sat ten GCSEs in Biology, Business, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, French, Geography, History, Latin, Mathematics and Physics, and will be going on to study Economics, Further Mathematics, Physics A Levels in RHS Sixth Form.

Jesse is currently on holiday in France with his family and comments; “I am really happy with my results and look forward to celebrating with family later”.

Jesse balances his studies with being in the CCF and playing the drums, in which he recently achieved his Grade 5 exam.

Burford School

Burford School GCSE Results 2023

Burford School is celebrating a solid set of GCSE, BTEC, Technical Award, and Cambridge National exam results this year, with the vast majority of our students now set to start their studies at sixth form in September.

This year, more than 60% of all our GCSE grades are a grade 5 or higher, with 54% of our students achieving a grade 5 or above in GCSE English and mathematics. Our BTEC students did exceptionally well, with 30% achieving a Distinction or better (42% in Engineering).

This is particularly pleasing given that this year Ofqual, the exams watchdog, announced that tougher grade boundaries would be imposed to return to pre-pandemic grading, lowering national GCSE results in England.

Given this announcement, it is all the more impressive that some of our students achieved brilliant individual results this year. These include Grace Linton who achieved four grade 9s in English Literature, English Language, RE and Food Technology, three grade 8s in Geography, Spanish, Drama and an 8-7 in Combined Science, and grade 6 in Mathematics. Reacting to her results, Grace commented, ‘I am happy with my results. I had a very good GCSE experience and now plan to take A-Levels in Geography, Drama and Psychology’.

Isabelle Lampard achieved two grade 9s in French and Spanish and a 9-8 in Combined Science, four grade 8s in History, Drama, Mathematics and English Language, and three grade 7s in English Literature, RE and Further Mathematics.

On opening her results, Isabelle commented, ‘I am very happy. I enjoyed my GCSE experience at Burford, finding it challenging yet interesting. I plan to go to Sixth Form and study History, Mathematics and English Literature’.

Mr Albrighton, Headteacher, commented, ‘I am so proud that our students have achieved such a solid set of results. All our Year 11 students at Burford have shown great endeavour and enthusiasm towards their studies over the past two years, which has been rewarded with outstanding outcomes today. Burford School wishes all our students the best of luck as they begin their next chapter of education.’

Mr Warren and Mrs Graff, Heads of Year 11, added, ‘We are delighted that on receiving their results today the majority of our students are now able to begin their next step in their journey after GCSE, whether that be further study at sixth form, college or embarking on an apprenticeship. This is a testament to their dedication to their studies as well as the tireless support of their parents and carers and teachers.’

LVS Ascot

Students at independent day and boarding school LVS Ascot, where students are given the support and opportunities to exceed expectations, are celebrating an amazing set of GCSE exam results. Grades 8-9 were up 1.5% on 2022, despite the ‘Great Reset’ of GCSE grades this year.

20.4% of grades this year were 8-9 (18.9% in 2022). This also represented the highest level of 8-9 grades in the ‘normal’ pre-pandemic years since 2014. One student achieved an incredible ten grade 9 passes including an A in Further Maths. Students taking the Maths Higher and Foundation did particularly well, they had the highest pass rate (97.7%) for a decade…and that was including the higher-marked Covid years. Other highlights include 100% BTEC pass rate and the highest percentage of grades 9-7 in a ‘normal’ year since 2014.

This was the first cohort to sit the GCSE exam after we made the change from IGCSE, so these results are fantastic and show how much modern foreign languages thrive at Queen Anne’s School. The students have worked hard and I am happy that all the extra time we spent practising for the speaking exam paid off. The girls who took part in the French exchange prior to the examination scored 89% in average in the speaking exam which shows how valuable those trips are. I wish our linguists every success in their further studies at A Level.”

Almost 75% of all grades received were 9, 8 or 7, nearly 54% were graded 9 or 8, and just over 1 in 4 were graded 9, the highest mark possible. Chethams School

Chetham’s School of Music students have achieved an outstanding set of GCSE results.

  • 96% pass rate (higher than the national average at 67.8%)
  • Over half of all grades are 9 –7 (higher than the national average at 21.6%)
  • Almost a third of students achieved a full set of 7s, 8s and 9s
  • 40% of all grades are 8s and 9s
  • Four students achieved a full set of 8s and 9s

Some other noteworthy highlights include one student who took their GCSEs a year early and achieved all grade 9s, seven students in Year 10 took their Music GCSE early and achieved grades 8 – 9, and some students have overcome personal adversity to achieve amazing results with the support of family, friends and staff.   The good news comes hot on the heels of a successful A-Level results day when the school reported an impressive 100% pass rate.

There have been numerous other successes, as well as good grades, for the year 11s. Chetham’s believes that musical talent shouldn’t be confined to the school walls and have facilitated the students in sharing their gift throughout their schooling.  They have given back to the local community by performing in major music venues, care homes, other schools, and public spaces. The school says its mission is to bring people together and ensure as many people as possible have access to music and the wellbeing benefits it brings. The students are at the heart of this civic mission, which is important as they’re developing into well-rounded individuals.

Joint Principal, Nicola Smith said: ‘This year’s GCSE students have achieved the highest standards not just in Music, but in the full range of their GCSEs. Many of the students now head into sixth form to continue their educational journey with Chetham’s and make the most of all the opportunities we bring to them. Congratulations also goes to our teachers who provide the best care and high-quality teaching and learning to all our students.”

Overall in the UK, music saw the largest percentage fall for any subject with at least 10,000 entries, falling by 12.5% from 37,705 last year to 32,980 this year. Chetham’s leads the way in ensuring those with a passion for music can continue their studies and receive a world-class musical education. Entry to the school is based solely on musical ability and potential, never on background or ability to pay, thanks to generous bursaries through the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme.

August 24, 2023 – 10:27am

Denstone College

Following the success of A Level results last week, Denstone College is once celebrating again after an exceptional set of GCSE results, published today.

With a return to 2019 grading standards, many schools would have been preparing for a drop in outcomes compared with 2022, but not for Denstone College who have seen an increase in the total number of grades awarded an 8 or a 9.

For scores of a children, an average grade of 7 or above (the equivalent of an ‘A’ in the old system of grading) reflects years of hard work and dedication despite interruption to their formative years at Denstone College as a result of the pandemic.

With high aspirations and expectations of all of our children, we are thrilled to have been duly rewarded. GCSEs mark an important stepping stone in the continued educational journey of our children and we look forward to seeing them flourish in the Sixth Form.

But as with all examinations, GCSEs alone do not measure success. Our pupils have achieved these results whilst contributing so thoroughly to our extra- and co-curricular programmes to make them rounded individuals.

Head, Lotte Tulloch, is incredibly proud of her charges and knows the future is bright.

Duke of York’s Royal Military School students celebrate GCSE success

Students at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School, near Dover, are celebrating success at GCSE with some exceptional progress made by students.

12 students have been awarded highly competitive academic scholarships into Sixth Form with outstanding individual success from Imogen Thorne, Georgina Trimby, Shreya Limbu, Christiano Rodriguez and Mayowa Aiyere. In addition, 8 students have received Sports Scholarships, 7 of them joining the schools’ rugby performance pathway with Ealing Trailfinders.

Principal Alex Foreman said, “As a top performing non-selective school, many of our GCSE students will be staying on for Sixth Form where we provide university-style accommodation and facilities. While academic achievement is at the forefront, our full boarding environment allows Dukies to immerse themselves wholeheartedly in a breadth of activities beyond the classroom, developing strong character and diverse life skills. As a result, Dukies’ achievement across the age group remains exceptional. I look forward to welcoming our Dukies back to our Sixth Form along with a record number of external applicants who join us in September.”
