Congratulations to Bromsgrove School pupil Tom Martin
20th April 2020

Congratulations to Bromsgrove School pupil Tom Martin, who has been successful in securing an apprenticeship with the Coal Authority in Nottingham.

The apprenticeship involves day release to Nottingham Trent University, where he will study Real Estate. Tom has been offered a 5 year fixed-term contract, with a great starting salary and his university fees will be paid.

Speaking about Tom’s success, Senior Mistress (Pastoral) and Head of Futures (UCAS and Careers), Miss Zia Leech said “After doing a lot of research, Tom realised that a straight degree was not right for him, therefore he did plenty of groundwork to apply for apprenticeships and now he will gain a degree, whilst working at the same time. At the end of the 5 year programme, Tom will be a Chartered Commercial Surveyor and have a degree in Real Estate. This is a fantastic achievement in such a competitive marketplace“.

“I’ve always had a firm belief from a young age that an apprenticeship was something that I wanted to pursue,” said Tom. “The idea of on the job experience, amalgamated with a degree that was fully paid for, seemed a very attractive proposal”.

“At the start of the academic year, my goal was to secure a degree apprenticeship in real estate. The application process was long winded and required additional effort on top of the academic curriculum. I’m very grateful to the School’s Futures team, who were extremely supportive and helpful throughout the entire process”.

“My Mother and I had to travel to Nottinghamshire on two occasions for my interviews and without her prepping me ten minutes before the interviews, the outcome may have been different. So thanks Mum!

Once I was offered the position at the Coal Authority, I had a mixture of feelings of gratitude, excitement and a small element of relief. I now look forward to starting a new challenge in my life”.
