New Hall School Year 8 Chemists win the Salters’ Festival Challenge at the University of Cambridge
2nd April 2019

New Hall School is delighted to announce that its Year 8 students were awarded first place, out of 20 schools, in the Salters Festival of Chemistry competition, which was held at the University of Cambridge.

Each school is represented by a team of four Year 8 or Year 9 students. During the festival students experience exciting hands-on practical Chemistry challenges and carry out Chemistry investigations. During the competition, the judges were looking for excellent team work and independent problem-solving skills.

The festival also included some amazing chemical demonstrations. Niamh, a Year 8 student in the Girls’ Division at New Hall, said, “The last experiment was the best. One of the helpers brought out a balloon filled with hydrogen and the demonstrators set it alight with a long stick so he could keep his distance. Then a huge heatwave flew towards the audience and a loud bang filled the room. It was the biggest flame I’ve ever seen! A great ending to an intriguing lecture.”

The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry are an initiative of The Salters' Institute, whose aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young, through a one-day event held at universities across the UK.
