Preparatory School rugby stars achieved another significant success in a long-running community competition.

Rydal Penrhos’ U11, 10, 9 and 8 squads welcomed Colwyn Bay Rugby Club for the second leg of the annual Cooper Cup, with the school holding a 3-1 advantage following a very competitive first leg of action.

The school’s U8 side got Rydal Penrhos off to a superb start and racked up 55 points in their victory, with Tomas Milligan, Charlie Lister-Brookes and Oscar Jewsbury all playing a leading role in their success.

This meant that the Prep School retained the competition for the fifth consecutive year, and the U9 side confirmed an outright victory thanks to a narrow 7-5 win over their Bay counterparts.

With the scores tied heading into the closing stages of the game, late tries from Shane Ayeni and Felix Griffin confirmed victory for the home side.

The visitors achieved a notable 42-35 triumph over Rydal Penrhos in the U10 category, and a closely fought U11 contest saw Bay achieve success by a slender 26-21 margin.

This meant the final aggregate score was 5-3 in favour of the Prep School, with captain Cieran Milligan and vice-captain Freddie Barrington-Chance lifting the coveted trophy following the event.

Head of Boys’ Games Jamie McLeod, said: “The Cooper Cup is the highlight of the rugby season for our Prep School pupils, and it was another fantastic spectacle with both sides giving it their all.

“We have a long and proud association with Colwyn Bay Rugby Club, and the future of the game is in safe hands when you saw the amount of talent of show from all sides taking part.”
