Gender issues in boarding schools

Date: January 17, 2018

Audience: Any member of school staff. This workshop is as relevant to members of the school SMT as it is to pastoral and boarding staff.

Why should you attend?

“While the average secondary school will have enough lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students to make up two full classes, 90% of primary and secondary teachers and non-teaching staff report having no training to support LGBT students, according to Stonewall. For many teachers, it can be a struggle to know how best to support students, especially when there are no policies and procedures in place.”

The Guardian

This workshop will explore the many diverse issues associated with students that question their sexuality whilst at school and the practical steps that staff can take to best support them. We will also consider what, in a boarding house context, schools need to do to be able to continue to meet their needs.

  • An overview of the national picture regarding LGBT school age students
  • Trans and gender questioning students – trends and developments
  • Practical considerations and solutions
