Role:

We are searching for a Science Technician to undertake duties in support of the work of the teaching staff in the Science department.

This is an ideal role for a science graduate and for the right candidate there is the possibility of career development routes into other areas of the Collegiate such as teaching, running activities or leading, developing and coordinating STEM provision and would suit an ambitious graduate as there are external training courses specific for this role with York College, paid for by the Collegiate with time allowed to complete.

This job description is written at a specific time and is subject to change as the demands of the Collegiate and the role develops. The role requires flexibility and adaptability and the employees of the Collegiate need to be aware that they may be asked to perform tasks and be given responsibilities not detailed in this job description.

 

Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing support to the science teaching staff
  • Preparing equipment ordered by science teachers
  • Cleaning and maintenance of science equipment
  • Reporting any breakages, stock shortages or equipment malfunction to the senior technician
  • Being aware of current requirements with respect to Health and Safety and keeping up to date with any new developments
  • Liaison as required, through subject teachers, Sixth Form students about equipment needed for the internally assessed practical investigations
  • Preparation of solutions, specimens and any other equipment for experimental work etc. as required by science staff
  • Assistance with preparations for Open Days, Easter and Summer Schools and attendance as necessary
  • Photocopying and collation of exam papers and worksheets as required for individual lessons
  • Filing of Science Department resources

 

The Appointed Candidate will have:

  • A good honours degree in science-based subject
  • Masters in a related subject (Desirable)
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with staff in the department and across the Collegiate
  • Motivation to work with children and young people
  • Positivity in being a role model to students and staff
