Matron at Aysgarth School (residential or non-residential)

The School:

Aysgarth is a traditional boarding prep school for boys.  The staff team is very committed, talented and work closely together.

Boys at Aysgarth go on to some of the most selective senior schools in the country, including Eton, Harrow and various other well known national boarding schools.

Class sizes range from 7 to 16 (with the average being 12), the classrooms are well equipped and resourced, and expectations are high.  The boys are well disciplined and are keen to learn and progress.  The school offers a very full curriculum including sports, performing and creative arts, and a wide range of hobbies and activities.

Responsible to:

The Headmaster and wife, the Head of Boarding and Houseparents and in day to day matters to the Head Matron/Senior Matron.

 

Aim of post:

To assist with and contribute to the supervision and care of the pupils, in particular with

regard to the health, hygiene, clothing and general welfare of the boarders.

To enthusiastically and pro-actively foster successful working relationships with the pupils and staff based upon mutual trust, respect and responsible professional conduct.

 

Specific areas of responsibility:

Pupils and their parents

To help with the care, supervision, cleanliness and presentation of the pupils in the school, coordinating and liaising with other boarding staff as necessary.

To be aware of the school uniform and clothing requirements of the pupils and to ensure that they have all the items that they require; to assist with the good standard of clothing of the pupils, advising the Head/Senior Matron on laundry, repairing and naming requirements, as and when necessary.

To contribute to the induction of new pupils joining the school; in liaison with the other boarding staff, ensuring that any ‘settling in’ problems are resolved.

To provide a sympathetic presence in the school and to be sensitive to those who are having difficulties coping with school life; to liaise closely with other relevant staff concerning the progress and welfare of the pupils.

To be ‘on call’ two evenings/ nights per week in the boarding house providing care and support for the boarding pupils.

To drive children to hospital/medical appointments as required.

 

Health and Medical (First Aid training will be provided for by the school)

To assist with the general health and well being of the pupils; in case of any doubt or concern, to refer medical matters to the school nurse.

To assist the school nurse/Head Matron with the supervision of medical matters and the administration of medication.

When the school nurse is absent, to supervise medical matters and the administration of medication with the Head Matron.

To attend to any sick pupils in bed.

To help with the boys’ daily showers.

To be present in the changing rooms when the boys change before and after games, and to help the boys as necessary and appropriate, to be ready on time and to leave their lockers and the changing room tidy.

To provide touchline First Aid at matches.

 

Domestic

Laundering of clothes and bedding, including putting items away tidily when they return from the laundry.

To help with the efficient management of Lost Property by implementing regular routines

that the school has in place.

To assist with the matrons’ role in the supervision of breakfast, lunchtime, high tea and

the changing room.

To ensure, with the other matrons, that at exeats and half-terms the matrons’ sitting room, bedroom and the boarding areas of the school are left tidy.

To be available a few days before the beginning of term to facilitate the preparation of bedrooms, common rooms and changing areas.

After the end of term, to ensure that the changing room, common rooms laundry and all boarding areas are cleared up and tidy and that all clothing and bedding are accounted for and either packed or stored properly.

 

General

To be familiar with the school’s code of practice for health and safety, and its policies and procedures, in particular with regard to those for child protection and countering bullying.

To attend boarding and Matrons’ meetings.

To do some overnight duties when required as part of general cover or to support the matroning team.

 

Remuneration

  • The School has its own generous salary scale which is at a premium to the national scale. The salary for this role will depend on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
