IAPS NATIONAL SWIMMING FINALS 2013: TWO GOLDS FOR BISHOP’S STORTFORD COLLEGE

Felsted Young Musicians Flying High

Record music exam results place Felsted Preparatory School children at the top of national achievement levels once again. Pupils gained a 100% pass rate and a staggering 88% Merits or Distinctions. Achievements ranged from Grade 1 to Grade 6 on a wide variety of instruments, from Harp and Electric Guitar to Flute and Drum Kit. The exams, marked out of a possible 150 points, require students to achieve at least 120 points for a Merit, or 130 points for Distinction. This year’s national average of Distinctions awarded was 17%, a number more than doubled by Felsted’s musicians, who received 39% Distinctions.

Blundell’s team speak out to win national finals

competition to find the best young public speakers. More than 300 schools from across England and Wales entered the English-Speaking Union’s public speaking competition and, at this year’s final, Blundell’s School were crowned the winners. The team, Oscar Mustard, Freya de Lisle and Rowan Carew, all in Year 11, had already won four rounds to get to the finals, which were held at Goodenough College in London. In addition, Oliver Mustard won the individual category as Outstanding Personality, which was judged by a ballot from amongst the audience of all the schools competing and their supporters, while Blundell’s Head of English Tim Dyke was presented with a long service award by the ESU.

Bilton Grange – U12 Regional Champions

The Under 12 boys claimed the Midlands Hockey title at Cannock, winning all 6 of their matches. BG averaged a goal every 4 minutes, scoring 19 and conceding just one. All 10 boys contributed to the success as they displayed great levels of skill along with an appreciation of the need to play as a team. BG's opponents in the final were Warwickshire's other representatives, Solihull School. BG took an early lead through Angus Robinson, and Marcus Tarrant completed the scoring from the penalty spot. Club Captain for the day, Ollie Park, stepped up to accept the trophy.

St Swithun’s sports scholar Emily Sambrook Smith, aged 16 from Winchester, has been selected to play in the A team for England Lacrosse's U19 tour to Canada in July 2013. The tour coincides with the 2013 Lacrosse World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario. Emily’s selection followed England U19 trials in Gloucestershire earlier in the year.

Easter Holiday Camp Fun at Felsted

Felsted hosted over 170 children, aged 4 to 14, at its annual spring camps over the Easter school holidays with an exciting choice of courses. Children from schools across East Anglia attended the cricket, swimming and musical theatre workshops, including students from Widford Lodge, Bishop’s Stortford College and Helena Romanes and from further afield such as Old Buckenham Hall and Barnadiston in Suffolk.

Public Schools’ Fencing Championship 19-21 March 2013

Fencers from Gresham’s took part in the recent Public Schools’ Fencing Championship, which attracts entrants from schools throughout the British Isles, including a number who have national representative honours. Many schools, such as Millfield and Shrewsbury, have fencing clubs with forty or more participants and a long tradition of dominating this event. Therefore, it was a brave decision after only two terms of fencing at Gresham’s to send participants, bearing in mind the very real possibility of a whitewash.

Children at Prior Park Preparatory School enjoyed a once in a lifetime tour of Iceland as part of a Science and Geography trip.

Forty pupils and four staff spent five days touring a small corner of the island. Experiences began as soon as the party stepped off the plane. They were taken straight to the Blue Lagoon and bathed in the hot steamy blue green waters. Mud packs were applied and they all enjoyed the relaxation and, for the staff, the rejuvenating properties of the silica salts in the water.

Finalists make History at Twickenham

A fantastic effort from Felsted saw two teams do the double as finalists at Twickenham, the home of English rugby last weekend. Felsted became the first ever school to take both U15 and U18 sides into the Daily Mail Vase Finals. A bitter wind and constant snow flurries created highly unfavourable playing conditions for all teams, with both Felsted squads fighting hard but unfortunately neither were able to raise a trophy on the day.

One of the lead roles, sleazy nightclub owner The Engineer, was played by Braze Leung, a boarder from Hong Kong, who previously had never tried acting.

St. Martin’s Ampleforth pupils, Isabella Fox, Maire McGovern, Verity Fullerton-Smith and Erin Anglim were shortlisted in this year’s Simon Beaufoy Short Story Competition. The final of the competition was held on Monday 18th March at Malsis School. Maire McGovern won the senior class with her story entitled ‘Dream’, with Isabella Fox being runner up in the same class with her story, “The Stardust Dreamer”.

East Anglian Students Engage in World Affairs

Pupils became politicians at the fourth annual Model United Nations Conference, which took place at Felsted on the 3rd and 4th March. The exciting programme welcomed pupils from 15 schools, both regional and international, who travelled to Felsted to debate, discuss and attempt to solve real word problems at the Medical Aid themed conference. International students hailed from as far as Germany, Morocco and Switzerland, and many of these were returning delegates, who had attended the European Round Square Conference in October 2012.
