Boarders for Barnardo's

Children helping children

The BSA and Barnardo's partnership aims to have children helping children and provide opportunities where BSA pupils can get involved, carry out social enterprise activities, gain work experience and make a difference.

If you would like to be involved or find out more about the Boarders for Barnardo's please email bsa@boarding.org.uk.

Boarders for Barnardo's - the project

BSA’s Boarders for Barnardo's partnership was officially launched at the Golden Jubilee Annual Conference for Heads in May 2016. The project aims to have children helping children and provide opportunities where BSA pupils can get involved, carry out social enterprise activities, gain work experience and make a difference. At the BSA Annual Conference for Heads delegates were challenged to get involved and pledge their support.

Heads were challenged to be one of 50 schools to raise £1,500 for the charity by May 2017.  50 represents the BSA Golden Jubilee and £1,500 to represent the 150th anniversary of Barnardo’s.  Even if schools are unable to raise funds due to prior charitable commitments, members are encouraged to raise awareness and support the BSA events during National Boarding Week

Pilot schools - their experiences

Prior to launching the Boarders for Barnardo's project to all member schools, BSA ran a number of small pilot projects with Radley College, Sexey's School, St Peter's School, York and Westonbirt School.  Read about their experiences below.

Radley College

B Social Boarding House has adopted Barnardo's as its charity for this year. A representative from Barnardo's spoke to the boys on January 13.

Two days later one of the boys spoke to the school about the organisation and then there will be a collection at the Sunday Chapel service. This is shortly followed by the centre-piece event: a bring-and-buy sale in the coffee shop. Parents will be encouraged to bring some of those unwanted Christmas gifts and buy something to take home instead. It is hoped we can give out free T shirts for purchases over a certain amount. A number of the boys play the bagpipes and one of them plans to busk in Oxford at some stage in the second half of the Lent term: this has proved a real money spinner in the past! Finally the Housemaster will host a fund-raising Garden party in the summer term, with a raffle and/or an auction.

Upcoming Events:

Saturday 24th May- a boarding house concert for parents with a collection afterwards going to Barnardo's.

Sunday 12th or 19th June - Barnardo's - Bagpipe Busking in Oxford.

St Peter's School, York

Pupils from St Peter's School, York have been selling baubles to place on their Christmas tree in support for the Boarders for Barnardo's project. Baubles went on sale during Advent, and in exchange for a donation pupils may add a bauble to the Christmas tree and include their own Christmas wish or message. The project aims to raise awareness and funds for the children’s charity and the partnership with BSA. ation and then there will be a collection at the Sunday Chapel service. Sexey's School

Sexey’s School is delighted to be working with the BSA to support the outstanding work of the Barnardo’s Charity. We are committed to improving the life chances of those children who would benefit from a boarding education and welcome this new initiative. Our Charities Commission run by Sixth Form students have worked tirelessly in the past to raise awareness and valuable funds for the likes of Children In Need, The Children’s Liver Foundation, Fair Trade and the school’s partner charity, Macmillan Cancer (Douglas Macmillan the founder of the charity was an Old Sexeian).

To promote the work of the Boarding for Barnardo’s initiative, we will be holding an Auction of Promises at the Sexey’s Spring Ball next term which is being organised by our energetic Parent Staff Association (including rugby books donated by James Haskell, England and Wasps rugby player).

Working with parents, staff, students and the BSA, we hope to raise awareness of Boarders for Barnardo’s. Through this work, we hope many Barnardo’s children will benefit from a boarding education where they will become part of a loving family and a strong community in which they can grow, flourish and develop into confident and responsible individuals. cer (Douglas Macmillan the founder of the charity was an Old Sexeian).
