Celebrating 50 years

BSA member schools are leading boarding worldwide with over 75,000 students in our care. Throughout this year we aim to promote and celebrate all that boarding can offer.  There are many ways in which your school can join our celebrations and we encourage you to email details, tweet your boarding fun to @BSAboarding using the hashtag #BSAis50

As we continue our Golden Jubilee celebrations members should now have received their jubilee plaques and commemorative magazines. The winners of the boarding fellowship have begun their research and the winner of the Stephen Winkley Boarding Achievement Award will be announced at the Annual Dinner during our Heads' Conference in May. National Boarding Week will take place from June 20 and members are encouraged to let BSA know what celebrations you are planning in your school. At the end of March your school will receive it's next Golden Jubilee toolkit. BSA have planned a number of events during National Boarding Week.

About the Boarding Schools' Association

The UK is the world leader in boarding education with around 500 boarding schools, over 75,000 students and representatives from more than 50 countries.  UK boarding dates back more than 700 years, but the newest boarding school was built as recently as 2013.

Boarding offers a wide range of benefits including strong pastoral care, excellent learning and teaching and first-class facilities. There are also extensive activities outside the classroom and the chance for students to forge lifetime friendships.

The Boarding Schools' Association champions boarding and promotes boarding excellence. The BSA represents around 500 independent and state boarding schools in the UK and overseas.  BSA services include professional development, government relations, communications, media, publications, conferences and events.

BSA Golden Jubilee Honorary President

Tony Little, former Head Master of Eton is Honorary President of the BSA during the jubilee year.

Tony Little was educated at Eton and Cambridge, where he was a Choral Exhibitioner.  He read Law for 36 hours before deciding to read novels instead.   With interests in literature, music, sport and drama, he slowly came to the conclusion that a schoolmaster’s life might offer a breadth of activity which would be stimulating and an involvement with young people which would be rewarding.

Following a PGCE at Homerton College, Cambridge, he was appointed to the staff at Tonbridge School where he taught English and ran a sixth form student boarding house.

After five years, he was appointed Head of English and Drama at Brentwood, then at the tail end of an era as a leading Direct Grant school of 800 pupils, moving towards independence. For five of his seven years at Brentwood he was also housemaster of a 13-18 boys’ boarding house.  From Brentwood he was appointed Headmaster of Chigwell School, a 7-18 boys’ school with 650 pupils.

Some seven years later, he became Headmaster of Oakham, a fully co-educational school of 1,050 pupils aged 10-18, over half of whom were boarders drawn from the UK and overseas.  Developing links with industry and introducing the International Baccalaureate were particular features of that period.  In September 2002, he took up his post as Head Master of Eton College, 30 years after leaving with sights set firmly on a life in anything but teaching.

If you would like Tony or a member of the BSA to speak at your event or write for your publication please contact Aileen Kane.
