Advisory Service

Advisory Service

The BSA responds to requests for advice from anyone interested in Boarding Education. Because there are specialist advisors for independent boarding education specifically ISCias and the DfE, for state boarding education, requests for advice on choosing a specific school are, usually, channelled through these advisors.

As of April 2007, inspection of boarding in both independent and state schools, has been conducted by Ofsted. Inspectors still relate to the National Minimum Standards for Boarding, but inspection reports now fall under the five outcomes of Every Child Matters.

The five outcomes are:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic wellbeing

Boarding inspections are conducted at least every three years.

More information can be found at the Ofsted website.

For advice on Independent Boarding Education - ISCias:

Alternatively contact the BSA office for a bespoke INSET/CPD and consultancy to meet the needs of individual schools.

INSET

Possible INSET topics include:

  • Safeguarding including the basics of Child Protection
  • Essentials of Boarding - an induction session to complement in-house or school
  • Self-evaluation and auditing boarding
  • Marketing your boarding
  • Crisis Management - whole team or SLT focus
  • Health promotion
  • Medical matters for non-medical staff
  • Smarter working – Better time and task management for house teams or SLT

Consultancy

This can take the form of a visit to your school to focus on a single topic or theme including a Boarding Audit, Improved Self Evaluation - and more effective approach to developing boarding provision, marketing, or a review of an aspect of boarding such as the Medical centre/provision.

This can be designed as a workshop for a small group of senior staff or take the form of an audit type visit and report.

Please note that the period at the start of each term can quickly be booked up.

To avoid disappointment, please e-mail bsa@boarding.org.uk with possible dates, times and requirements.
